Her central thesis is that Shakespeare exposes rather than reinforces masculinist fantasies of female evil (29). This claim is particularly persuasive for Macbeth, although not for King Lear.

Cristina León Alfar is Professor of Shakespeare, late 16th and early 17th century English drama, and Women’s and Gender studies at Hunter College, CUNY. Most recently, she is the author of Women in Shakespeare’s Cuckoldry Plays: Shifting Narratives of Marital Betrayal, Routledge, 2017.
