Mayan books from as far back as the 5th century are known, and it is believed that the Maya started writing things down centuries before that. As a specific discipline viewed through the lens of European literature, American literature began in the early 17th century with the arrival of English-speaking Europeans in what would become the United States.

The American literary tradition began when some of the early English colonists recounted their adventures in the New World for the benefit of readers in their mother country (see our list of the best English authors). Perhaps the first book to be published by in America was the Bay Psalm Book in 1640, produced by thirty ministers, led by Richard Mather and John Cotton.
The Angles brought the story of Beowulf with them to England in the sixth century. This was about seventy years about the death of Muhammad (PBUH) and in the same age as the beginning of the great Tang Dynasty in China. Three hundred years later, the manuscript that still survives was written down. What happened to it for the next seven hundred years is unknown
