It has an excellent introduction - based upon the most recent historical and literary scholarship - that clearly sets out the importance of the trobairitz for our understanding of the troubadours and medieval poetry more broadly, but also acknowledges the many unsolved (and probably unsolvable) mysteries that surround these talented and audacious women.

I'm amazed that no one has yet reviewed this wonderful book! It is a complete collection of the songs of the women troubadours ("trobairitz"), with original Occitan texts and elegant but accurate English translations. It has an excellent introduction — based upon the most recent historical and literary scholarship — that clearly sets out the importance of the trobairitz for our understanding of the troubadours and medieval poetry more broadly, but also acknowledges the many unsolved (and probably unsolvable) mysteries that surround these talented and audacious women.

When it was first published, this Bruckner and White anthology superseded the deeply flawed and misinformed anthology by Meg Bogin. Thankfully, Bruckner and White are still in print, and in an affordable paperback format!

Anyone interested either in the experience of women in the Middle Ages or in the earliest love poetry in the romance vernaculars should read this book.

This is a really interesting book and it is very well-written. It hasn't been that common to find history books about the contributions of women. We definitely need more of them.
