Nevil Shute Norway was born in 1899 in Ealing, London. He studied Engineering Science at Balliol College, Oxford. Following his childhood passion, he entered the fledgling aircraft industry as an aeronautical engineer working to develop airships and, later, airplanes. A Town Like Alice (United States title: The Legacy) is a romance novel by Nevil Shute, published in 1950 when Shute had newly settled in Australia. Jean Paget, a young Englishwoman, becomes romantically interested in a fellow prisoner of World War II in Malaya, and after liberation emigrates to Australia to be with him, where she attempts, by investing her substantial financial inheritance, to generate economic prosperity in a small outback community-to turn it into "a town like Alice" .
A Town Like Alice book. Nevil Shute's most beloved novel, a tale of love and war, follows its enterprising heroine from the Malayan jungle during World War II to the rugged Australian outback. Jean Paget, a young Englishwoman living in Malaya, is captured by the invading Japanese and forced on a brutal seven-month death march with dozens of other women and children.
Town Like Alice, A. by. Nevil Shute. A dramatisation of Shute's romantic novel, set during WW2 in Malaya, and then after the war in London and Australia. Not, in my opinion, one of Shute's finest.

A Town Like Alice is a classic romance (among other things), by Nevil Shute. It was published in 1950, and reflects the bias and prejudices of its time, but it’s also a powerful book about a smart, tough, resourceful young woman. A Town Like Alice is really three stories. Jean Paget, a young woman living in England after WWII, is left a great deal of money by a distant relative.
