Dennis Wheatley was the British master of occult writing selling millions of books from the 1930s onwards. One of his most famous creations was the Duke De Richleau. In this audiobook it is World War II and Britain faces increasing pressure and burden as the Nazi's swarm across Europe. The Duke discovers that a Voodoo adept from Haiti is travelling on the Astral Plane to gain information regarding the convoys. Now the Duke and his friends must confront their powerful foe not only on the Physical Plane but on the Astral as well. It's a terrific book and Christopher Lee delivers a wonderful performance to this fascinating story.

Strange Conflict - Dennis Wheatley. Dennis had a full and eventful life, even by the standards of the era he grew up in. He was expelled from Dulwich College and sent to a floating naval run school, HMS Worcester. Dennis Wheatley was my grandfather. He only had one child, my father Anthony, from his first marriage to Nancy Robinson. The conditions on this extraordinary ship were Dickensian. He survived it, and briefly enjoyed London at the pinnacle of the Empire before war was declared and the fun ended. That sort of fun would never be seen again.

Dennis Wheatley During his life he wrote over 70 books and sold over 50 million copies.

Wheatley was the eldest of three children, and his parents were the owners of Wheatley & Son of Mayfair, a wine business. He admitted to little aptitude for schooling, and was expelled from Dulwich College, London. In 1919 he assumed management of the family wine business but in 1931, after a decline in business due to the depression, he began writing. His first book, The Forbidden Territory, became a bestseller overnight, and since then his books have sold over 50 million copies worldwide. During his life he wrote over 70 books and sold over 50 million copies.

When the bombs fall on London, the elderly Duke de Richleau is forced to consider a problem of the utmost urgency.

In the darkest hours of 1940, increasing numbers of Britain's ships are being attacked and sunk in the Atlantic. The Duke de Richleau attributes the Nazi's success to the Forces of Darkness, but he risks his soul if he takes them on. The author also wrote "The Devil Rides Out" and "The Satanist".

Maybe if I hadn't read "The Devil Rides Out" first this book would seem better. The idea of battles on the astral plane sounds good, but it is so hard to describe such encounters that the end result is disappointing. Perhaps it's just the villain isn't as menacing or powerful as Mocata from "The Devil Rides Out".

This is a potboiler of its era. If you have a problem with the prevalent views of race and gender in the first half of the twentieth century, this book is not for you. If, on the other hand, you recognize that earlier eras believed and behaved differently than ours and you're in the mood for an occult thriller, try this one on for size. It's not in the same league as Wheatley's "The Devil Rides Out," but has plenty of chills and spills to keep one entertained. Combine Nazi spies with Haitian voodoo, throw in Wheatley's trademark snobbery and violence and harness it to a plot that drives at breakneck pace and you have a first-class potboiler. Yes it's politically incorrect as hell but it's also one hell of a ride. Couldn't put it down. Definite recommend.

Chose 5 star rating because Dennis Wheatley is a great writer and I was thrilled to find him still in print.
