I adore this book so far. Johnston has a "hipper" voice than, say, Phyllis Whitney, but the novel is still cozy and set in the late 70s. I have had a hard time getting back into Whitney's novels now that I'm older. I loved them, of course, when I was ages 14-17. In A Presence an in Empty Room, Johnson's book deals more with the supernatural return of the first wife. I totally recommend this book, its follows the tradition of the Gothic romance. The only thing i didn't like was the ending, its A Women marries a men she just meet, and they go to live in in his grand state.

Basic premise was silly and unbelievable. It seemed like a rip off of "Rebecca" to start, but went down hill fast afternoon "ghost"took over. I didn't like it.

This was the first Velda Johnston novel that I have read, and I was impressed. The book is very quick to get through, and you won't want to put it down. Published in 1980, the story is about a young woman named Susan, who has lost both of her parents. Soon after her father dies, she meets a wealthy man named Martin, at a Manhattan secondhand book shop. Martin is a widow who has lost his wife Irene in a plane crash. Both Susan and Martin become acquainted, and shortly afterwards, marry and move to his home in Maine. When Susan arrives at the house, she starts experiencing headaches. Shortly afterwards, she involuntarily becomes involved with supernatural occurrences caused by Irene. The rest of the story deals with Susan's fight to fend off these strange supernatural occurrences. Although this book is 20 years-old, it is entertaining and I recommend it.
