I liked all the different points of view.

There's the mountain man Preacher who only preached one time in his youth, and got stuck with the nickname. The four missionaries with various degrees of acclimating themselves to living away from the city. The movers in another train. The friendly and unfriendly Native Americans. And the renegade men of all nationalities.

There's the bad white men who make plans that don't work out for them, time and again. The mountain men who help out just for the heck of it. And the movers who need to work harder than they every had before just to stay alive and move down the trail.

It starts out with him rescuing four prisoners from Arapaho warrior braves. Then he has to get them away. Later the mountain man notices they're being followed. And the 'chase' begins. The whole book is him staying away from the white renegades and keeping the movers moving.

Love the different characters in this book. It's the type of book I keep thinking about after reading it. I'll forgot a part or two and will need to re-read it again in a few months. It's an enjoyable book.
One of the better Preacher books that I have read. A very interesting story of the mountain men of which there isn't as much written about as there are regular westerns. Only four stars due to the poor editing throughout the book that distracts from the pleasure of the story. It seems to me that this is a common problem with the Johnstone books, as almost every one I have read has suffered from poor digital editing.
Great read, I can't believe I haven't read any of his books before now. I'm going to have fun with his series of books!
Very disappointed with this book. I'd swear it was not written by an Johnson surely there must have been very interesting things involved in leading a large wagon train Rather than spending so much time killingothers
Light out of Fildon
A good Western. Quickly paced, with some character development. The story flows smoothly, and the history behind it adds an certain touch of believability to the tale. The protagonist is strong, almost superhuman, but decidedly human in his internal struggles with his place within society, his desires, and his freedom.
I really enjoyed the story and the characters. I would have given the book 5 stars, but I hated the curse words. I don't see how using the Lord's name in vain makes the book any better. Still this is a high adventure read, I recommend it
This storyline was heavy with details. The point was slow being developed. Also the character of Preacher was not held true to form.
Fact and Fiction well woven. Easily completed in a couple of sittings. Uses the vernacular of the mountain men and weaves historical information about the areas into the novel. I just finished the second book in the series - also very well done.

Mr. Johnstone does something every author should do. He published a list of his series in the proper reading sequence for each series. That reading list is only $0.99 on Kindle at Amazon.
