There was a sleazy strip club, you see, and every once in a while the back door opened just long enough to maybe catch a quick glimpse... Though a bond was formed from their pre-pubescent interest in naked women, Darren had another interest. A morbid curiosity about death. A curiosity that turned into something much more sinister.

I thought I knew Jeff Strand. I had read Draculas. I had read Kumquat. I had read a bunch of his short stories. Nothing prepared me for this. I feel bad for having this novel on my kindle for so long and not reading it. I bought it and forgot about it. It was only when I saw a bunch of people on another author's facebook page talking about how amazing this book was, I decided to move it up as my 'next to be read'. As soon as I did start it, I didn't want to stop until it was done. I felt the 'pressure' to finish it.

This is one of those epic novels that starts out with the meeting of our main character, Alex and our main antagonist, Darren as children. Jeff Strand masterfully separates the story into four parts: early school years, college years, marriage life, and the present. Every bit of the way Darren somehow manages to pop up into Alex's life. The story has plenty of action and whenever there's some 'quiet time', I always felt a sense of dread that something awful was about to happen. Whenever things were going good, Alex always had Darren in the back of his mind and as the reader, I felt that same way. Never before in a novel have a felt so much inside the main character's head as I felt with Pressure.

Seriously, I knew Jeff Strand was good, but I had no idea he was THAT good. If you miss this novel, you are missing out on what should be a cornerstone of horror literary. In my opinion, this book can stand toe-to-toe with anything from the likes of Stephen King, Clive Barker, or Richard Laymon.

I've read a couple of Jeff Strand's other novels and was impressed with them, enough so that I look for more from him. One thing I can say about Jeff Strand, is his novels are never slow and this was no exception. From the first page it reads so fast and easy you don't even realize how quickly you are getting through the book. I started this book one night. The next evening I finished it and it's not a short story, it's 300+ pages.
This is about Alex whose parents ship him off to a correctional school after he's caught shoplifting condoms. To me this seemed like a very drastic move on their part. He'd never done anything like this before, but they were looking for a reason to get him out of their lives. Immediately I felt for Alex and liked him. Once in the school he made friends with his roommate Darren. Then another roommate's dog goes missing and Alex catches Darren doing very questionable things to the dog's body. After a retaliation move by the friends against Darren things are never the same again. Then the book takes us to college. Alex is still a bit of geek and is paired up with a gore loving roommate. On his first day at college he walks into Darren. It's been years and he still remembers what happened with the dog at school. They soon become best friends with Darren claiming what happened was because he was a dumb 12 year old boy. Things start going really bad and Alex ends up doing something he never would have done without Darren's influence. Then Mr. Strand takes to Alex's life after college and he's married with a daughter and Darren's been gone for a long time. Then he reappears and tortures Alex's family for 2 years until everything comes to a head leaving Alex alone and damaged.
Read this book, you won't regret it, it's another great read from Jeff Strand and you'll want more of his work when you are done.

When Alex is sent to a boarding school after stealing condoms at age 12, he befriends his three roommates, including Darren. One night, Darren convinces Alex to sneak out with him, and the two boys form a brief bond from the experience. Alex soon breaks the bond after Darren shows a dark and deceptive side.
Years later at college, Alex encounters Darren, who assures him that he's no longer the disturbed 12-year-old anymore. The two start hanging out again, but Darren soon reveals his dark side once more, and it’s darker than ever.
The narrator of the story is the affable Alex, a frustrating but endearing protagonist who is comfortable sharing his insecurities. His first-person account portrays Darren as a strange introvert and master manipulator.
The author Strand is known for effectively blending horror and comedy, but ‘Pressure’ is pure horror and one of the most compelling reads in the genre.
Strand’s strong characterizations of Alex and Darren create a visceral hero-villain dynamic but with a twist. The decent Alex is actually weaker and more indecisive than the evil Darren, flaws which make Alex more victim than hero.
When Alex refuses to join Darren in his twisted games, Darren tries to convince Alex by forcing him into gut-wrenching, no-win scenarios.
‘Pressure’ tests the limits of victimhood, making you wonder where the line of heroism ends and nothing-to-lose desperation begins.
