TVO has penned a novel about the first Calvary troop formed by the U.S. Government. The Government was ill prepared to send military personnel West of the Mississippi without adequate training and equipment. From the onset problems became insurmountable due to climate, lack of water, Indians and finally dysentery and high fevers. The first crossing was as near a disaster as any planned military activity prior to this one. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

Taking place in the year 1833 or thereabouts, General Leavenworth, Colonel Dodge and 500 dragoons the forerunner of the U.S. Cavalry, going from Fort Gibson in what is now Eastern Oklahoma to the Wichita Mountains in Southwestern Oklahoma with many adventures and mis adventures with bad indians and also some bad teamsters, a young Lieutentant and a seasoned scout lead the way, based on fact at least background fact some what embellished, a good story, though the Ace edition that I read with no publication date is chock full of typographical errors.
