Moreover, she had learned that they were only dreams-distant, illusive dreams, which no longing in the world could ever draw down to her earth. When she abandoned herself to them now, it was with a sense of weariness, while an accusing inner voice told her that she was like the drunkard who knows that his passion is destroying him, that every debauch means strength taken from his weakness and added to the power of his desire. Marie Grubbe by Jens Peter Jacobsen, Fiction, Classics, LiteraryPaperback. Jacobsen's book remains a highly individual, idiosyncratic work with its own perspective and understanding. The Danish writer Jens Peter Jacobsen's 1880 novel, "Niels Lyhne" is one of the best novels that most American readers are unlikely to know. I knew of the book for some time but read it only recently.

Jacobsen's immediate importance was his status as the 'writer of his generation.' Jacobsen's breakthrough came already in 1876 with the historical and psychological novel Fru Marie Grubbe," entitled Marie Grubbe in English, "which for the first time in Danish literature presented a profound portrayal of a woman as a creature of instinct and desire and as a being searching for her own identity. The book's defiant individualism asserting human values as opposed to society's judgment was also a sign of modernity."

Jens Peter Jacobsen has been said to be one of the greatest Scandinavian writiers and this book is about a woman living a passionate life in the 17th century. It is well written, beautifully so at times, and while I would call Marie Grubbe very strong as well as passionate, I did not find myself really interested in her. That could be simply tbecause this story is dated and does not have the appeal of a classic, perhaps like people 2-400 years from now will not be interested in an icon like Marilyn Monroe or thankfully long dead American customs.

By most critical estimations, Jacobsen's other novel, 'Niels Lynhe', is far superior to 'Marie Grubbe'. I agree, but I still give this one 5 stars. If he is a little awkward at times, and if there are some technical issues which could be smoothed out, or some squishing or stretching that might or might not be wanted, he is forgiven. It is clearly written by the same wonderfully sensitive and poetic man who wrote 'Niels Lyhne', a fact that allows for some advance stars. Jacobsen has a scientist's eye for detail and a botanist's eye on the edge of the path, often pausing to share his mental notebook with the reader, while the narrative is suspended, without suffering, with uncommon ease. The story-line is simple, but well told. There is something about this little book which I find very appealing, it stays in the front of my head, it is distinct, defined, almost underlined, almost sparkling, charming. --
It might help, although its not necessary, to have a general understanding of 16th and 17th century Scandanavian history. The notes at the end of the text (oddly titled 'Preferatory') are helpful, but...
