Gin Phillips (Author). Amid a sensually sketched setting of rock formations, mesquite and juniper, narrow canyons, and night skies, Ren and Silas work side by side and try to bridge the growing distance between them.

Gin Phillips has done a wonderful job of bringing the characters alive. Sep 22, 2019 Karie rated it really liked it. Come In and Cover Me is a painfully lovely book. The ghosts of two women appear to her and she learns about their lives, and also about herself. We also learn about her past thru her thoughts and thru the ghost of I received this as an advance reading copy from Riverhead Books. Just like the ancient pottery that is a main focus of the story – the main character, Ren, is incredibly fragile.

Gin Phillips is the author of The Well and the Mine, winner of the 2009 Barnes and Noble Discover Prize in Fiction, and Come In and Cover Me. Through comparative and historical analysis, the book shows that reconstructive coalitions, such as labor and pan-Christian moral movements, can bring Catholics and Protestants together under new identities, significantly improving Catholic standing.

Come In and Cover M. It tore at every maternal fiber in my body. I couldn't put it down

When Ren was only twelve years old, she lost her older brother, Scott, to a car crash. Since then, Scott has been a presence in her life, appearing as a snatch of song or a reflection in the moonlight. Now, twenty-five years later, her talent for connecting with the ghosts around her has made her especially sensitive as an archaeologist. More than just understanding the bare outline of how our ancestors lived, Ren is dedicated to re-creating lives and stories, to breathing life into those who occupied this world long before us. Now she is on the cusp of the most important discovery of her career, and it is ghosts who are guiding her way. But what do two long-dead Mimbres women have to tell Ren about herself? And what message do they have about her developing relationship with a fellow archaeologist, the first man to really know her since her brother's death? Come In and Cover Me is the moving story of a woman learning to let go of the past in order to move forward with her own future.

Written with the same warmth and depth of feeling that drew readers to The Well and the Mine, Phillips's debut, Come In and Cover Me is a haunting and engrossing new novel.

I bought this based on the rave reviews. It also met some of my interests: archaeology, mystery, the supernatural & an introspectively focused novel. Unfortunately, the book was somewhat dull & fell flat for me. The archaeological info in the book was excellent & caused me to do further research of the area, the pre historic peoples & their artifacts. The main character was also well presented & sympathetic. However, the other characters weren't well fleshed out & I thought the "supernatural//mystery" plot of the storyline was dragged out & ultimately underwhelming. Unfortunately, the plot was so boring, I don't think I'm likely to pursue any other works from this author. I love to read, so that speaks volumes that I'd not buy another book from this writer.
I disagree with reviews that feel her grief was unduly long. One may never know the story of grief of another soul and I think that this book makes this point well. Yes, this woman has lost her way into her sorrow, but we can see the trail that has led her here.
I enjoyed the journey into the Mimbres culture and was intrigued with the pursuit of archeological story. I think this book leads us on a valuable journey.
Having said this, it does not have the luminosity of The Well and the Mine" by this author. The characters did not have the depth of resonance. Nonetheless, I anticipate her next book.
I got my copy from the library, but almost as soon as I started reading I knew it would be happily read--not only by me but alsy by my granddaughter who has been out west participating in digs. I immediately ordered it and had it sent it to her as a gift. An engrossing and enjoyable read! A great blend of solid science and history with a hint of the supernatural. Good work Gin!
Very good read!
I liked this book quite a lot. It touched on several interesting themes-ancient history, Native American culture, and supernatural. I expect if you're a Delint fan, you would especially enjoy it.
My biggest mistake was to read The Well and the Mine first. The characters were strong with a fun story line.

I felt that although the archeology material was interesting, the characters were weak. Not my favorite read by any means.
Did not enjoy this book.
"I have to believe the pieces can fit together...We owe them that, to tell the truth about them," said archaeologist Ren Taylor. She and Silas Cooper have met at Crow Creek, an archaeological dig outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico because he's found another piece of an Indian ceramic bowl that he knows she'll want to see. She is an expert on these artifacts and believes they were all made by one particular Indian girl. It takes time for the reader to understand how Ren knows this is so. It all has to do with the death of her brother, Scott, when she was just twelve years old.

Ren has a unique gift or curse, depending on your point of view. She senses the spirits of ghosts, including her brother and gradually as the story unfolds that of two Indian women, one younger and the other older. As these visions are increasing, Ren and Silas are falling in love. At first it seems so perfect. But Silas's inability to believe in Ren's gift and her ability to listen and hear the story of these very talented but haunting women, Lynay and Non, unnerves him, slightly souring their relationship. Sparks of love and arguments begin to fly as each displays weakness to the other.

The dig provides more and more clues to the lives of a "lost" people, their lives paralleling the losses in Ren's life. There are many ways of dying and this tale is about ability to live perpetually in denial or to embrace the loss and move beyond it to creativity and beauty. Yes, it even means being able to mourn in order to free the Spirit to fully live. One has to be vibrantly alive to tell the story of the "lost" ones, and that telling makes even the objects left behind in the passing even more enchanting and gorgeous! Then true love blossoms!

Come In and Cover Me is a unique story of love, death, loss and recovery; indeed it is a story of resurrection evolving out of the healing of love, memories, dreams, visions, and open and honest dialogue. The story is well-crafted, thoughtful, imaginative, and unforgettable in its gracious unfolding! Poignant, simply lovely contemporary fiction!
