In the stories, Brother Cadfael regularly disobeys the heads of his abbey .

In the stories, Brother Cadfael regularly disobeys the heads of his abbey, acts to bring about his own sense of compassionate justice (sometimes against church or feudal law), and does not condemn relationships outside wedlock. After Cadfael takes vows, he has a close affection for at least two young women: Sioned, the daughter of a Welsh lord (A Morbid Taste for Bones), and Godith Adeney (One Corpse Too Many). The two abbots that rule during Cadfael's time at the Abbey of St Peter and St Paul, Abbot Heribert (Herbert) (1128–1138) and Abbot Radulfus (Ranulph I or Ralph) (1138–1148), are both real historical figures.

I have loved reading the Brother Cadfael series, so giving them to a fellow Anglophile and lover of the Middle Ages has doubled my pleasure. I will probably borrow them back to reread after yet another friend and his wife have finished them too. Great reading, and three books in one volume just trebles the pleasure.
The Sphinx of Driz
One of my favorite mystery series. Eventually, I want to own the entire series. By the way this British edition is old but in good shape. I have found that the Brits seem to still put some quality into their publishing. I am so tired of American editions falling apart the first or second time you read them.
I was already hooked on this author by the time I found this volume. Fun reading. I wish I could have found the entire Cadfael collection in this form.
love the books-as good as the PBS series way back when
thank you
Ellis Peters is masterful, and these stories are among her best. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in historical fiction.
