When her husband, Otto II, is killed in battle, Byzantine princess Theophano becomes Regent over the tenth-century Holy Roman Empire, while her aunt and advisor, Aspasia, pursues a dangerous love affair with the late king's Moorish physician.

I really enjoyed this book by Judith Tarr. Tarr's books are romance novels with action and magic. Relations between men and women, often of different cultures, are central to nearly everything she writes. It was a different perspective and was an interesting and good read. Readers who don't like this element are advised to stay away from her work-I'm usually not too fond of the romancey subgenres myself. However, she does it well; there's plenty of spice and both the female and male characters have depth and personality, though there's a little too much "war of the genders" phrasing for me.

Here in lush detail is the powerful story of the tenth-century Byzantine princess Theophano, who was sent to be the wife and Empress of Otto II, son of Otto the Great, the Holy Roman Emperor. It is a long journey from the surviving Roman Empire in the East to the devastated Empire in the West. Theophano must apply all her Byzantine skills to truly become the Empress of the West, winning first her new husband's devotion, and then the love of her new people,But when Otto II dies unexpectedly, laving the empire to his four-year-old son, the Empress Theophano must fight one of the greatest wars of succession of the Dark Ages. For Otto II's cousin, Henry of Burgandy, would have the Regency for himself and the Throne as well--if he can take them.

The time period was interesting. Most English-language historical novels either skip it or are set in what is now the UK. I'm always startled to remember that for nearly a millenium Contantinople remained standing while Rome was a mere shadow of what it had been. How things changed.

I especially like historical novels like this one, which focuses of a minor or fictional character rather than a well-known one. This way there's no bickering about how much or how little the novelist reflects the person's true nature.

The romanic part was no doubt improbable, but adds a lot to the interest of the book.

While not a great book, this is a very good one,

Belongs in the historical romance category but keeps it's history honest. I give the author an A for adding an afterward that explains deviations from fact and provides an outline of the broader historical picture. I found it readable and am glad I bought it.

We need more books written on the Byzantine Empire this is was a very interesting period in time and I would love to learn more about it. I really enjoyed this book; very intersting, great charactors, and a fast read. I highly recommend this book.

Enjoyed being taken into a time and place far from my own. Rich in details, political, social, and culture. Story moves well, characters well developed, and intertwined believably.
