The book was excellent coming after reading the forgettable raising Abel. It was nice to read something that i got to learn from This book taught me a lot about what the Indians valued and it wasnt gold. It was home hearth and family. Its sad and sick to see the way desoto lusted for fame and riches. The only drawback to this book was the italics sequences they are difficult for the visually impaired to read. Dont tell me to get the audio book i hate audio books. I feel like i havent read anything with an audio book. These books will definitely make it to my bookshelf instead of the used bookstore. Please please dont read dark inheritance or raising Abel but ANYTHING Indian and the gears is worth the effort to read. And people do not fear secondary sellers on amazon. If you know what your getting you can get beautiful hardcover editions for give away prices. The worse thing i got was a missing dust jacket on a few books but for a penny a book who gives a damn about a dust jacket. My point on sellers should noted because i bought the entire wheel of time books 15 in all for less than100 dollars complete. I never go to the bookstore anymore whats the point when all you have to do is point click ship. Course the post man probably hates me

I rated this book high because it provides information about a time in North American history we never hear about. The Gears, as archaelogists, are able to intertwine historical findings with fictional characters. I recently downloaded Book Two to continue reading the fictional tale. Using Spanish historical writings and the correct invasion dates make the reader feel as if they are getting new historical info while being entertained by the novel. After reading Book One I now wonder why the English invasion wasn't met with all out war from the indigenous people. The Spanish, led by De Soto, subjected all people they encountered to the most vicious and violent treatment imagineable. It would have been completely justifiable had the indigenous tribes killed every man, woman and child stepping foot off a ship when the English arrived. Any reader who likes to read historical fact and fiction combined would enjoy the books which appear to be a trilogy.

I've started seven books by the Gears, and finished three of them. This book makes four. Despite their impecible research (and here I'm refering to "The People" series) this writing team has constantly disapointed me with characters who aren't very nice, who rarely care about each other, and stories that are more about spiritual beliefs and political infighting than interesting people and problems.

All of that changes in "Coming of the Storm." I was afraid to read this book at first, because my tollerance for brutality and victimization has really gotten low recently. But there was actually very little on-stage brutality, and, more importantly, we got to see our heros fight back, and respond in a very satisfying way to what was happening to them. The best part of the novel was the two main characters, and how much they cared about each other. Black Shell's sense of humor was great, and made many scenes that would otherwise have been too depressing, actually good reading. While I agree with the first reviewer on the board that the language was a bit too modern, I have to admit, I enjoyed it.

My biggest complaint was the way the book ended just when things were getting interesting. Yes, I saw the "Book One..." warning on the cover, but still, there could have been a little more accomplished in 480 pages, with more attention to the native victory. I look forward to receiving that in the next book(s).

My headline is written this way because these two writers are a powerful team. Having read many of their collaborative books, I should have been prepared for this one, but it caught me unaware--such a powerful story backed up with indexed research, a rare thing indeed. If there is a flaw, it is one I've noticed before--they cannot resist inserting present-day colloquialisms into their work. This has the effect of jerking the reader out of the experience of time and place. I try to overlook it...
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a compelling good read, to natives and newcomers to Florida who long to know more than just our latter day timeline, and to those doing serious research about the time period.

WOW-very impressive series of three books.
#1 I thought best, #3 very good, #2 a little slow
In visiting Native American ruins, my thoughts have been "what was it like for the people?"
The Gears do a very good job of describing what life was like then in their books.

I thought I was ordering a different book that was part of the other books in the "People" series books. Howsoever, I was not disappointed when I started reading it! It is Just as GOOD as the "People" series books, yet, a little different, too. I totally recommend this book to anyone who LOVES adventurous books, even to those who likes to learn about some of the ways things where way back when things was harder and for those who want to enjoy a GREAT book! Just as soon as I can I am going to get the others in the series of this one, also. I feel that the Gear's are exhalent authors, as well!!

5 stars for an extremely well researched novel about the time in our native history when everything changed. But even though the battle begins with the whites and the people are faced with brutality that they had never seen before a blessed few refused to go peacefully into the night. They gather and fight learning as they went..They well insure that the story of the people would go on. This is the first book in a series and sets the stage for an exciting tale of courage and victory of the spirit.
