Price's literate espionage novels (Here Be Monsters is the most recent) are of the cat-and-mouse variety, with an emphasis on mood, character and plot intricacy requiring more than a little patience. Those virtues are carried to a fault in this extremely slow-building and talky novel. Best of all, the bureaucrat who concocted that plot against his rivals finds it exploding in his face. Even in the spy world there's still some justice. Louise A. Merriam, . Phillips Memorial .

A classic Anthony Price tale from 1986 involving treble-crossing Russians, over-here Americans, UK secret services departments at war with each other and, at the centre of it all, Price's renegade spook/historian Dr David Audley, getting on a bit now but still managing to be too clever by half, this time on a jaunt around North Devon with a ne. The greatest strength of these novels is variety of points of view: nearly every one is told from the inner perspective of a different character, even though the character might appear in several of the books.

Since the only other review of this book was written by someone who begins by confessing an inability to appreciate this type of literature, I thought it best to submit a confirmation that, even for an Anthony Price fan, which I am, this is decidedly not one of his better books. His Audley/Butler series contains some real gems, but also a surprising number of clinkers. If you want to see what Price can do at his best, read Other Paths to Glory, The Old Vengeful, October Men, or The Labyrinth Makers.

I have to admit this was a sale table buy and I wish I had left it there. I have a hard time really getting into a British character if it is not well written and these characters were not. Unless you are a big fan of this author, my advice is the stay away.
