I really enjoyed this book. Greg Matthews has spun a yarn that takes the reader to the old West. It's neither a happy story nor a sad story, just a good story. The characters were richly developed so I cared about their personal journeys.

Heart of the Country is what I would call an epic story and a most unusual central character, Joe Cobden. I really enjoyed this book. The expanse of the story is almost like a Charles Dickens story.

Heart of the Country book. Greg Matthews is easily comparable to some greats such as Mark Twain or Stephen King in that his characters are lusciously filled with depth and realism and overall his books are heavily character driven. He also captures your attention immediately and refuses with utmost pride to write a cliche. Dark and twisted is his taste. This story beautifully intertwines and breaks apart only to twist and recombine and split paths multiple times and reconnect at the end for a very satisfying read.

I was afraid this was going to be a sad story but i was so pleasantly surprised by it. It was recommended to me by my mom and when she told me it was about a hunchback Indian i put off reading it. I wasnt ready to read a Western, much less one that would just upset me, being native makes them hard to swallow sometimes. This was neither of those. I like the characters and their storylines so much i couldn't put it down and I'm going to read another by Matthews now.

Heart of the Country is what I would call an epic story and a most unusual central character, Joe Cobden. The expanse of the story is almost like a Charles Dickens story. One looks at the trials and hardships of the characters in the 1800s in the United States and wonders why people today think they are so mistreated. Don't think I will ever forget the main character or that time in our history when the buffalo would never be wiped out.
Dead Samurai
The taming of the West and slaughter of the buffalo are early themes of this expansive novel, written from the perspective of an intellectual hunchback who is destined for a life of hardship and suffering. This peculiar backdrop makes for a sometimes riveting storyline. The writing is impressive and much can be learned about America’s history in the 1800s through the turn of the century.

Character development is exquisite but unfortunately for the reader, most are despicably unlikeable. The writing alone kept me reading this expansive tale, but by the end I admittedly was growing weary of the cast of shady characters who lived lives of not so quiet desperation.

Those who like tales of the wild West, sagas, elaborate insight into the minds of the tormented soul and the common foibles of humankind, will enjoy this book.

I really enjoyed this book. Greg Matthews has spun a yarn that takes the reader to the old West. It's neither a happy story nor a sad story, just a good story. The characters were richly developed so I cared about their personal journeys. I guess it was a bit of a cautionary tell of things left unsaid to the people who mean the most to us.

I almost never tackle a book this long; however, I did tackle this one, and I have no regrets. The characters are complex and intriguing, and I was caught up in this excellent and unusual novel. Give it a chance; you won't regret it...
