Newspaper reporter Chelsea Faust runs marathons for fun and spends most of her spare time in the darkroom. She's working for a small weekly newspaper now, but she hopes to win the Pulitzer Prize someday. At 28, she lives alone and lets no one tell her what to do, much to the chagrin of her Portuguese-American mother and her German-American father.Enter Simão Freitas, an immigrant from the Azores who brings with him old-country views about how men should be in charge and women should obey their husbands. He is part entrepreneur, part fish market worker, supporting his mother, sister and grandmother and dreaming of making enough money to build a big house in the hills. When they meet at a Portuguese festival, the attraction is instant, but any chance at a future together appears doomed as Simão battles memories of a painful loss while Chelsea pursues a news story headlong into a situation that could cost her life.We follow Chelsea into the colorful world of Little Portugal, where she becomes fascinated by the stories she hears of immigrants seeking a new life in America and begins to value the Azorean heritage of her ancestors.

It was easy to cheer for Chelsea Faust in her clashes with the chauvinistic men in her life. Chelsea's mother was Portuguese-American, but her father was German-English and both parents thought it was way past time for Chelsea to marry. But when she meets a charming Portuguese-American who thinks she should follow the old Portuguese ways of being only a dutiful wife and having many children, Chelsea must figure out just how important marriage really is to her. I really liked this story and enjoyed how living in America brought about attitude changes in both Portuguese women and men, who must work out new ways to deal with traditional values. Sometimes I just wanted to slap Simao, but thought Chelsea coped with him much better than I! She remains a feminist, yet finds romance. A fun read.

This so accurately portrays the struggle of Azorean women both native and decendant. Our familia is always first, usually with much sacrifice. It is a universal struggle to maintain a sense of self. I am both born and raised in San Jose and my grandfather is from Fayal.

I thought this book captured your interest, everyone wants to understand how immigrants left their homeland looking for the brass ring. How could their spirit support them through the separation from close family ties to search for the American dream. it is the dream that all can follow and wonder how our ancestors started in this country. My four grandparents left four different villages in the Azores to make their way to America and start new lives. I have visited those villages and felt such as Chelsea the pride of finding where your ancestors started from.
