Fiction. Women's Studies. "The expert translation of this almost Gothic story lifts the veil on the place where environment meets the psyche, on women's sensuality and wit. A gift of Portuguese women writing to the English reader." -Lisa Katz

This beautifully written translation by Monique expresses her profound suffering at the unaccounted departure of husband, Alexis. The reader feels a great deal of empathy towards Monique as she shows feelings of abandonment, rejection, sexual depravation and loneliness (not only expressed in adulthood at the loss of her husband but also during her childhood). Monique is a good example of how much a human-being can suffer throughout his/her life due to the indifferent behaviour of other people. Monique does not, however, only display negative feelings. The reader is also made aware that Monique is a capable, strong and independent woman. She also shows signs of shrewdness since she is able to observe the superficial behaviour of people when present in social circles.
Monique has a haunting voice. Don't expect to be able to put the book down once you pick it up. I didn't want it to to end and am hoping that just as "Alexis" generated "Monique," maybe "Monique" will challenge an author to continue the story of this person who constructs her life for us up to her early twenties.
It is an elegantly written novella, which is beautifully translated from the Portuguese into English. It tells a story of a woman in search of herself. In this process, she is trying to understand her love for a husband of three years while developing her own creativity as well. It is a captivating, highly sensuous story, told in a style that can be described as a combination of memoir, stream of consciousness, and epistolary tradition. The novel is a must-to-read for everyone who appreciates poetic, thoughtful, psychological, and erotic literature.
