There's a lot going on in Cowboy Rubies by Azura Ice and Maria Moonstar: there's Old West, vampires, werewolves, steampunk, ancient prophecies and a quest. There's so much going on that the story struggles to contain all the chunks, and gives a distinct feeling that had it been divided in two and published separately, the results would have been much stronger. The prophesies and quest parts sit very uneasily with the rest.

Shades Hallowvale, a Moon Wolf, is mostly dead from a Life Drinker’s attack when Kyle finds him, but nursing him back to health is a career move Kyle can’t walk away from because Shades has information on the rubies, the theft, and an insidious plot deeper than one man’s greed. Shades soon becomes more to Kyle than a means to an end, but even as the two men track down the thief, Kyle fears their tenuous connection may not survive and the rubies really will destroy everything they love.

After years of fighting, a tenuous treaty has been established between the Moon Wolves and the Life Drinkers. Kyle Vanderbelt's job is to keep the peace-a job that gets much more difficult when Kyle's fellow agent and former lover is accused of stealing the ancient Moon Rubies that are said to sustain the balance of power between the two peoples.

It's not often that I've had to force myself through a book, but this was one of those times. The description held such promise but fell really short of delivering. The characters were okay if not well-developed. The dialogue didn't work and the secondary characters turned me off even more.

It was sci-fi meets lame characters meets lame plot. If the storyline was a little more focused, it might have worked out. Having so many aspects thrown into a book just detracts from the quality of the read.

Tracking down the rubies was such an urgent issue with a definite timeline, but you wouldn't think it was so urgent from the way the characters were behaving. There seems to always be plenty of time to have a little sex. Heroes going after the bad guys. Aren't there more people on this planet??? All the characters seemed to have had a past relationship with each other. At the end, I felt relieved and proud that I had endured the trial to my patience.

I was so wrapped up in this awesomely fresh story that the steampunk elements only enhanced and intrigued me. The romance between the two heroes progressed naturally and didn't force me into awkward rushed love scenes. I felt like they really were falling in love. The secondary characters, whew now there's a show stealer, completely enhanced the story and I found myself panting over Flanigan, the alpha leader...I hope there's more of him in the next book. Yum.

So, overall, this is a fast paced, new take on the vamp and were world. I adored it and will definitely keep after the series. Congratulations to the authors for creating a wonderful story full of action, romance, and steam!

I would have given it five if there had been more background about the culture of this world. I'm hoping this is the first of a series and the next book(s) will flesh those things out. Like what the Conclave is like and how come the humans are so okay with living with vampires and werewolves. Other than that I really enjoyed this book. Though if this were set on earth I would have had issues with the conclave spy since she didn't act very 'lady like' like a woman would have plus homosexuality was very much not something even discussed in that time frame let alone treated so openly since there were laws that would have had them jailed and even hanged for engaging in those kind of relationships back then but it's AU/Sci fi you can get away with that. Setting that aside it was a very good and interesting book that made for some highly entertaining light reading. I hope these two ladies collaborate again so we can see more of Kyle and Shades and this impending war they hint at in the book.

Almost 4 stars! This novel looks like it's a start of a series so I'm hopeful that the next one will hit the 4 star mark (assuming there is one, of course).

Kyle, a Conclave agent and Life Drinker, is set on the search for the Blood Moon Rubies, believed to be stolen by a fellow agent and former lover, Scott Bashion. Kyle is given a deadline of three days to complete his investigation, as the Rubies are all that stops a war from erupting between the two clans, the Life Drinkers and the Moon Wolves. If it became general knowledge that Rubies were missing, chaos would rule.

While on Scott's trail, Kyle finds a badly beaten Moon Wolf, Shades, who has been left for dead. Grudgingly abandoning the search for Scott, Kyle stops to help Shades and agrees to help him to the next town, where Shades is the Sheriff. It soon becomes apparent that the assault on Shades and Kyle's investigation are linked. Realizing that they each had information the other needs, they agree to join forces, along with Conclave spy Anastasia and Shades' brother Flanagan, who is the Alpha of the local Moon Wolf pack.

There is an instant attraction between the two men which Kyle tries to fight/deny as he is afraid it will interfere with his investigation. Both men struggle to keep the investigation on track as sexual tension, devastating loss, painful memories, former lovers, lack of trust and an ever-looming deadline threaten to derail it and the hope of any lasting relationship in the future.

I would have liked to have given this novel a higher rating as I thought the plot and basic characters were good. Unfortunately though, I found it a bit lacking in depth - both in exploring events and in the characters' emotions/reactions. Whether this is due to the authors trying to cram in as much world-building as possible for future novels, the whole deadline thing (an awful lot happens in a short amount of time) or simply lack of pages, I'm not sure. I just think the novel could have been a whole lot better if more time/pages had been spent giving it the depth the plot deserved. That said, if a sequel does eventuate, I would certainly read it as I feel the concept deserves a second chance.(less) [edit]
