In this chronicle of the European Thirty Years War and taking place between the years 1624 and 1636, Mother Courage follows the armies back and forth across Europe, selling provisions and liquor from her canteen wagon to whomever she can. One by one she loses her children to the war but will not part with her livelihood - the wagon. The Berlin production of 1949, with Helene Weigel as Mother Courage, marked the foundation of the Berliner Ensemble.

Considered by many to be one of the greatest anti-war plays ever written and Brecht's masterpiece, the play is a powerful example of Epic Theatre and Brecht's use of alienationeffect to focus attention not on individual characters but on theissues of the play. This edition published in Methuen Drama's Modern Classics series offers a full introduction as well as Brecht's own notes and textual variants, setting it apart from all other editions available in the English language. The play is presented in John Willett's trusted translation.

'One of the greatest poets and dramatists of our century' (Observer).

This is a great example of Brecht's dialectical theater. It's jarring if you're used to Aristotelian theater or Shakespeare, but it is really fantastic with multiple layers. You should see it played. This edition also has great notes surrounding the play.

We read this aloud at our book club meeting and discussed its relevance to today. It is set in the 30 years war in the 1600's. Since we are going on 18 years in Afghanistan it was appropriate. Mother Courage has a resilience and drive to survive however she can and reacts to the changes in the war. It is not an easy read and can be very bitter but very emotional as her children suffer.

I need this book for a class on Marxism so I ordered it over the break and started reading it. It's a fantastic play so far. I find it really funny, but I have an odd sense of humor to be honest. I tried looking to see if I could find a dvd of a production of it, and I came up short. The scenes are really short, but the story is really good. Mother Courage is a fantastic character. This is the first work by Brecht that I have read and I'm going to see if I can find his other work at my campus library if I ever get time to read something that isn't for class.

Cheap, and same play as all the others on this site.

Worthwhile having to compare to the original translations.

Characters don't even have correct lines like in the original. Downloaded this for class and looked like an idiot when I started reading Mother Courage's lines but in every other edition those lines belong to the Sergeant.

Good
Exactly what I was looking for for my Humanities core class.
