This was not simply a contrast between metropolis and village; his community had given up on their lives.
Not as truly strange as Louis de Bernieres (sp?) - this has more of a subtle dreamlike/fable quality that I really enjoyed. A really good first novel. Looking forward to seeing more from Dearing. This year's top sellers.

The Bull Is Not Killed. It is the spring of 1974, a period of mounting political tension in Portugal. Luís longs for the day when Portugal's repressive dictatorship will be overthrown and his country restored to its proper place in the world.

Born in London, Ontario, Canada, author Sarah Dearing attended journalism school, but decided she did not possess the proper instincts for the genre, preferring fiction. To pay the bills, she took a position in the film division of the Writers Guild of Canada, writing fiction in her free time. In 1981 she moved to Toronto's diverse, artsy Kensington Market area. The book tells of a recent university graduate, Luis, and a gypsy girl, Luisa, who meet in a chance encounter at the seaside.
