Aline Templeton writes well, and she builds and sustains tension effectively. Her suspects and protagonists are diverse, credible, and interesting. I do think the horror in the plot relies on too much coincidence - too many seriously defective people in a very small population, all focusing their awfulness on one innocent person.

Night And Silence book. NIGHT & SILENCE (Suspense-UK-Cont) – G Templeton, Aline – Standalone Hodder & Stoughton, 1999 – Hardcover Tessa Cordiner and her policeman husband David have moved to an idyllic rural village in Wales. But the idyllic life soon turns to terror. The body of a dog is found that police feel may have been practice for a human killing.

As a catastrophic virus devastates the Scottish countryside, killing cattle and destroying lives, Detective Inspector Marjory Fleming finds herself at the stormy heart of a troubled, trapped community. Marnie Bruce has hyperthymesia; she can remember everything she has ever seen. Everything except from one fateful night when she was eleven; she woke up in an isolated cottage with a head injury and her mother gone. Twenty years later Marnie heads back to Scotland seeking answers to what happened, but in the small town of Galloway, her mother’s disappearance still burns in the air and Marnie’s return looks set to tear open.

When David marries Tessa he feels life is starting all over again. He gets a transfer to a small police station in mid Wales, leaving behind the stresses of inner-London policing, his previous marriage, and the son who doesn't want to see him anymore. Tessa, an artist, will be able to paint from the cosy little cottage in a Welsh village. But soon David and Tessa realise that they've chosen entirely the wrong village: it's full of unpleasant people, innuendo and nasty looks. Tessa is being harrassed by a local youth who turns out to be something much more dangerous than a stalker. And when a local nurse is killed and David's job become all-important once more, she has no one to turn to...

The author was new to me and I feel I've made a good discovery. I really enjoyed the story: the settings, the characters and the plot. The author uses a device of starting chapters with an anonymous post-crime interview with someone who must be the villain. This kept me guessing and there were enough diversions so that their identity didn't become obvious until very near the end. I also really liked the way the pressures of David's police career and Tessa's artistic endeavours impacted both on their marriage and Tessa's fears. I will definitely be reading more books by this author.

Slow to start but interesting once it finally got moving. There are so many early references to Gavin, you just have to know something horrible is about to happen.

I have enjoyed all of Aline Templeton's books - and have read every one of them. The characters are believeable and likeable, and the plots are all well executed. Altogether good reads, and I highly recommend them.

Story set in England about a young detective trying to balance work and family. The book is a slow read and never grasps your attention but the story line is good.

I love Aline's books another great one.
Outstanding with a very surprising ending. This author ranks as one of the very best in my opinion.
