Not bad for a weaver's so.

Not bad for a weaver's son. He doesn't like the comparisons to Angela's Ashes that have greeted his latest book - he says his is more fu. The Billy Boy title was rejected by Eland, the publishers which reissued the book last year, because of the German condoms that go by the same name. It has sold more than 20,000 copies. The University of Central Lancashire at Preston is where Woodruff deposits his papers ("Handing in my cloth to God. You understand me?"). Another university in the north of England, then.

From William Woodruff's birth in 1916 (in the carding room of a cotton mill) . Billy's boyhood was not all misery. William Woodruff was born in 1916 into a family of Lancashire cotton workers.

From William Woodruff's birth in 1916 (in the carding room of a cotton mill) until he ran away to London at the age of sixteen, he lived in the heart of Blackburn's weaving community in the north of England. But after Lancashire's supremacy in cotton textiles ended with the crash of 1920, his father was thrown out of work. Working-class pride and culture made for tight family and neighborhood bonds and added savor to the smallest pleasures in life. Leaving school at 13, he became a delivery boy in a grocer's shop.
