Though this is an English translation, the prose is beautifully written, flows like fine wine. The author has found a way to demonstrate love, grace, honor, integrity, industry and courage. The book does not preach; but rather, leads the reader through the virtues in a subtle and beautiful way.
Unquestionably, this is one of the finest books I have read and I have read a whole lot. It did win the French equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize in 1991. I only regret that it is so difficult to find, my public library has no copy; but happily I have located many copies through Amazon and have shared them out.
Would I recommend it? Yes. To any who think and care.

One of the best book I have read. Very sensitive, well written and even though it is very difficult, to some extent has humor within it.
A must read book.
