This is the first book by Lavyrle Spencer that I've ever read. I'm a long time romance reader, but I incorrectly got the impression that Spencer's work was "old".

Both publishing companies faulted the book for having too much humor and for being too narrow in scope, as the bulk of the book was set within a single house. This is the first book by Lavyrle Spencer that I've ever read. I remember seeing a book of hers that my grandma was reading when I was in Jr High.

Miss Abigail bristled. Got to be the sheriff does 'at," Max said importantly. You go over and see Sam about it, then he'll send the wire

Miss Abigail bristled. You go over and see Sam about it, then he'll send the wire to anyways. Stymied, Miss Abigail stood, stiff-backed and upset, at a loss now. She didn't want to traipse all over town letting the entire citizenry know she was anxious to have that man out of her house. What rankled was that he was partially right

LaVyrle Spencer (born July 17, 1943) is an American best-selling author of contemporary and historical romance novels. Twelve of her books have been New York Times bestsellers, and Spencer was inducted into the Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame in 1988. She retired from writing in 1997.

It's a definite keeper with the perfect balance of wholesomeness and passion. Spencer has a very descriptive style of writing (some may find her wordy descriptions a bit too lengthy at times), but she describes her settings well. What I liked about this book was the conflict between the hero & heroine. I never wanted the book to end!

A book of this grade is generally well kept and is in good shape to read and store. ELLY In town, they called her "Crazy Widow Dinsmore. Sturdy spine all pages intact physically. Might have acceptable shelve wear. But Elly was no stranger to their ridicule-she had been an outsider all her life, growing up in a boarded-up old house under the strict eye of her eccentric grandparents. Now she was all alone, with two little boys to raise, and a third child on the way. WILL He drifted into Whitney, Georgia, one lazy afternoon in the summer of 1941, hoping to put his lonely past behind him.

Early Waffle
I've ordered books from many dealers, both for myself and for customers at the book store my wife and I ran for 25 years. Never have I gotten the level of personal service that I got from these people. Not only was the book better than described the shipping was rapid. I not only got a confirmation email as soon as I ordered- surprisingly few book dealers bother with this - but I got a personal email from the book itself. Even accurate as to the amount of time it had been on their shelf. To top it off, you are dealing with a worthwhile endeavor. What more can I say? I have bookmarked them and will in future make them my first stop when book searching. Oh, and the price was great. Oops, almost forgot the book while raving about Better World books... I'veread all Spencer's, most several times. This is tied for first (Separate Beds, The Gamble, which is sort of a sequel} So, great seller, great book.
A railroad baron and an old-maid spinster seem like an unlikely combination, but this is one entertaining story! When two men are injured during a train robbery both men are taken to the home of Abby who has agreed to care for them. As both men recover, Abby finds herself drawn to both men and ultimately must chose between the two. I loved the humor in this novel as well as the slow character development of Abby and the hero. The only thing I didn't like about this novel was how the rejected man was treated. He may not have been the best match for Abby, but he was a good, decent man and didn't deserve the way his engagement to Abby was broken.
After Judith Mcnaught, Spencer has become my second favorite romance writer and that is no easy feat considering my extremely picky taste when it comes to writing exceptional love stories that take you away from our insane world and transport you into the lives of two exceptional individuals who you admire, love, cherish, and with whom you wish their stories never end!!!!

Hummingbird is such an example of a beautiful tale of two souls joined together by chance, laughter, anger, heartache, and perseverance; perseverance of one's heart, mind and soul to not only survive but to live, to live through your emotions and break free of your fears and insecurities and embrace an imperfect love with extreme passion and heart.

For Miss. Abigail McKenzie with a will of a true lady tried to hold on to her virtues, etiquette and propriety with such tenacity upon meeting a Mr. Jesse Dufrayne that she feared it all would break, snap, and fail her when the inevitable happened: to succumb to her true sensuous nature with a man thought of as a train robber and a complete scoundrel when dealing with a proper lady.

It is David who is more to Abigail's taste when she is forced to play nurse to him and Jesse when they are both found wounded, after being picked off the train in her hometown, due to David's heroic attempt at trying to save the train from the likes of Jesse Dufrayne. But it is Jesse who spits fire and wakes the sleeping maiden into a rage every time he happens to open his mouth.

Spencer portrays Abigail's and Jesse's combative personalities- as well as their vulnerabilities towards each other- so effortlessly and with such a deep understanding of their human contradictions, you cannot help but fall in love with them yourself.

Towards the end of the book, Spencer achieved what few author's can accomplish with a couple of gut-wrenching scenes: she made me cry twice, not just a few tears falling delicately against my cheeks- they were tears falling ignominiously and appallingly making my cheeks and nose ruddy.

And so HUMMINGBIRD has made-without any hesitancy-the top 10 love stories I have ever read!
So far my least favorite of LaVyrle's stories. The love scenes felt more like attempted rape than mutual and although some may love a macho hero, Jesse just seemed too rough and aggressive for my taste. I'd stick with either The Endearment or Years if you want a kinder, gentler hero.
I first read Hummingbird many, many years ago & went on to buy & read all of LaVyrle Spencer's books. I bought this one for my niece in order for her to have as many hours of reading pleasure as I have had. I couldn't find new, but my niece said the book was in good shape.
Normally, I don't care for books that go back in centuries, but this book peaked my interest. I found I couldn't wait to open the book and read more. It was set back in the 1800's and interesting relationships, for sure. LaVurle Spencer is one of my favorite authors. I am rarely disappointed by her writings.
Love this story. I've shared this book with my friends. I recently discovered this author and I'm happy to find her books.
