And one has the sense that Harrison sees this Robert Corvus Strang as beautiful. Sundog begins with a William Blake quote that ‘eternity is in love with the productions of time’ and I felt that this was the essence of the story. Be Well into the story Strang, the protagonist in Sundog, recounts to Jim Harrison - actual author and fictional (but near true-to-life) character commissioned by the father of one of Strang’s ex-wives to write Strang’s memoirs – a conversation they had had about beauty.

I came to Jim Harrison's work or works rather late, having been an avid reader for almost 40 years I just recently discovered this author. And I must say that I am glad it happened this way. Jim Harrison in my opinion is not one of those universal authors that everyone will like. He has a way of story telling and character development that is different than most others. SUNDOG takes you places you didn't plan on going with people you never thought you'd meet down a road you never thought you'd go down in a way that leaves you feeling good when the trip is over.

One of Harrison's best books. Well developed characters and tight story line. Much of Harrison is reflected in the Strang character so filled with a self-destructive personality brimming with engagement in life's challenges.

A joy mixed with too much, too close.

The stories of Jim Harrison live in my mind long after a reading. Magical and evocative is not overstating this writers potential when you read his best work. This is not exactly a perfect Harrison story but it's good enough.
