Musical Aura Island
Dashiell Hammett was one of the few writers the great Raymond Chandler said he admired, and this collection makes it clear why. Hammett's plots are thick with the psychology of his characters, yet his writing is still spare and punchy, each sentence taut and well-considered. Chandler and Hammett are both masters of white space --that is, what is left unsaid is as well-figured as what is said. Hammett's readers are treated with respect and given the opportunity to piece together the mystery themselves, in just the right time, just one step behind the detective, which is exciting and engaging. The stories in this collection are full of intrigue, but also clever and brutal and funny and sad and very, very human. His stories like Red Harvest are quintessentially American, from an interesting and violent time in America's history when cities were growing fast and grappling with corruption, organized crime, labor struggles, and other "big city" problems often for the first time, while at the same time struggling to hold onto quaint "small-town" habits; a fascinating clash. The Maltese Falcon, on the other hand, has a wonderful international feel, full of unforgettable and exotic characters, great atmosphere, and tons of twists; it also features one of the all-time great Anti-heroes, the morally ambiguous and quite possibly reprehensible Sam Spade --one of the most famous detectives in the world, even though he only appeared in this one story! All of Hammett's stories are rich with American slang and patter, the phrasing and expressions often hilarious and always a true delight to read. I will wrap up by saying that I am not necessarily a fan of mystery, I am just a fan of great writing, and this collection really delivers. Also, these Library of Congress editions are well put-together: handsomely laid-out, strongly bound, well-annotated --and an incredibly good deal at this price. I have reread this book again and again since buying it; it belongs on the shelf of anyone who loves fantastic writing.

Given the slew of 5-star reviews for this volume I don't have a lot to add to the discourse. However, I would say this, as I find it somewhat underrepresented: HAMMETT's NOVELS ARE FUN.

Along with all the other great facets of his writing, such as the political contexts and the foundations for the hard-boiled detective, the thing that grabs me about his writing is just how much of a rollicking good time it conveys. Red Harvest is great with its client vs. services rendered tension.

Another excellent example of the FUN of Hammett is The Thin Man's Nick-Nora main character relationship. There are just enough hints at consensual promiscuity and one can't help but smile at the subtle mysteries this marriage contains...

Once again, I focused on this aspect of the novels simply because everything else has already been said. This is a great collection, and reading it in the high-quality format of a LOA volume just adds to the experience.
Lonesome Orange Kid
Dashell is tops, from the Continental Agency OP on. In the end of the compilation of his work is the Mr.& Mrs North stories.
The NYC dicks are watching his place and the bad guy burst in intent on shooting Nick North.Nick elbows his wife out of the bed hard.
Shots are fired and the NYC dicks are hot on the heels of the purp. Norra wakes from her black out state and starts complaining that she has missed the best part of the whole thing. The Dick say; "By God,now there is a woman with hair on her chest." Then he apologizes to Nora,
and she say no offence taken.Still she is pissed she didn't get to see the action.Who but Hammett can write stuff like that!
The guy was in WWI and got discharged for TB,then he fought his way back in to the Army for WWII,an adventure junkie, who can write.
