Riddle of the Sands opens with a bang and doesn't stop, not even on the last page

Riddle of the Sands opens with a bang and doesn't stop, not even on the last page. My first clue that this was going to be even more exciting than The Cross of Sins, something I thought was impossible, was when the walls of Laptev prison in Siberia where Professor Fantom and Shane were visiting, literally blew out by a bomb. I didn't think that Geoffrey Knight would be able to increase the heat level in Riddle of the Sands from book 1, The Cross of Sins but he proved me wrong - from the action/adventure sequences that are indescribable, to the wonderful characterizations and the sex. Riddle of the Sands is for the true adventure lover.

The large, open windows were framed by white shutters, and an ocean breeze tugged gently at the light, shimmering curtains, inviting them out onto the wide veranda. On the warm grass, several large,. scattered coconuts-hairy, hard, and oddly masculine-lazed in the sun. Lining the edge of the lawn was a shining white beach with an old wooden jetty stretching out over the water. Rays of light glittered on the turquoise sea. At the end of the jetty, a thirty-foot yacht bobbed gently on the sparkling water.

Riddle of the Sands - Geoffrey Knight. I don’t doubt he’ll be studied and written about in history books for decades to come. Me, on the other hand-I intend to rewrite history books. Caro Sholtez leaned forward then and said in a low, serious voice, Max, I’ve found the first piece of the clock. Outside the cell, Shane paced anxiously up and down the corridor while Daniel checked his camera settings.

Riddle of the Sands is actually a sequel, which is essential to knowing and understanding the characters and dynamics of this book, but nowhere is that actually stated. You MUST read the previous book to gain an understanding of the large cast and their purpose. I have to say this because during my first conversation with Geoffrey about his books at the Gay Romance Lit retreat in New Orleans, any praise of the book would have sounded like frantic tapdancing to cover for the appalling (and, ok, hopefully amusing) faux pas I made.

But for me the most thrilling part of the book was in the Nile Valley, Egypt. This was such an exciting sequence that I won’t even attempt to describe the danger and the impossible escapes that happened in the nick of time. I’ll just say that Will should have been dead. No human being can survive the punishment he endured.

This was a no brainer entertaining story. I liked it because it was a fast paced page turner. If the 2 or was it 3 sex scenes had been eliminated this book could have been for midschool youths. Still it was a fun read. I wasn't too keen on the relationship (though it is really never explained exactly what sort of relationship it is) between Jake and Sam, as it seems like maybe it might have been a daddy/boy street hussler relationship, but this is so very minor part of the story. I like being entertained and that the book did for me, it was a fast fun read.

Really, REALLY bad. All the 5-star reviews must be coming from the author's friends, or people who are very easy to please, because this is HARDLY a 5-star book. As erotica, it fails -- there are only two mediocre sex scenes (three really, but two of them happen simultaneously), with no erotic tension or build-up, so they're not all that hot, and they're all in the first half of the book. The rest of the time, the characters are constantly taking their shirts off to reveal their rippled abs or wide shoulders, and that's about as hot as it gets... which on the printed page, is not very compelling. Sadly, the cover art is the most erotic thing about it. As romance, it fails even harder -- the author seems to be attempting to build romantic tension between two of the characters, but that ends up going absolutely nowhere. As an adventure story, it's downright awful -- cliched, corny, cartoonish, derivative and basically just super lame, but WITHOUT any camp or humor to redeem it. Looking for compelling characters? There are none -- they are all two-dimensional (at best), and their motives for doing what they do are unclear, especially the villains. In short, it's like a bad Saturday morning cartoon that takes itself way too seriously. I have to assume this is a sequel to something else, because it totally fails to explain who the characters are or how they know each other -- it assumes the reader already knows, which is just bad storytelling.

Bottom line: if you want a compelling gay erotic/romantic read, or else a good adventure tale, or good storytelling, or well-drawn characters, or even something with just an ounce of intelligence or wit, this has none of those things.

Yeah...so look, I think if you're looking for a realistic story, you should keep on moving, cuz this isn't it. The villain is over the top, the action is outrageous, it really was like a Bond movie, with some Night at the Museum, Little Shop of Horrors and maybe some Dora the Explorer? Anyhoo...it's just way the hell over the top, so if the crazy action-adventure, saved just in the nick of time, every crazy thing that can go wrong, does--then don't read this.
But after the first, I knew what I was getting into. I did like this, there were times when I laughed when I'm sure I wasn't supposed to, maybe I should have been white-knuckling my Kindle, but I was giggling.
Having said that...there were some moments in there that did, in fact, get me. Emotional moments, sweet moments, sad moments.
I think my biggest complaint with this book was there was so much going on, and there are so many characters and there is so much action, that I felt I was missing some details, I could see the action sequences playing out, but I wanted...idk...I wanted a little more of the characters and their interactions, because when we get them--they're awesome. These guys take good care of each other and have good hearts and ...you see some little romances developing and I want IT!This one was a little lighter on the sex, I think...just at the beginning and then its all go, go, go, but...well, I'm not even getting into that.
I'm definitely interested in what happens next with Sam, Jake, Daniel, Shane and Luca especially. And Will...God bless Will.
So definitely over the top, action packed, but I did enjoy it. I will keep reading these.

I enjoyed this book, and the thoughtful ensemble of characters. The story is a little contrived, over the top, with a few too many plot twists, but enjoyable nonetheless.
