I have been a fan of Piers Anthony for many years now and this book was a great read. I liked how all the characters were friends in the past and reaquitted themselves again in Dawn's quest that the king made her go on to find herself and the pundora box to save the kingdom from the puns. She ran into people she knew that wanted to do her in. I liked where her and Picka fell in love with each other at the end of the book and were happy.

Well-Tempered Clavicle book. Well Tempered Clavicle is the thirty-fifth book in the Xanth series by Piers Anthony

Well-Tempered Clavicle book. Xanth remains a land of happy endings, however, and readers can expect the usual amount of enjoyment from this thirty-fourth Xanth tale. -Booklist on Knot Gneiss. Well Tempered Clavicle is the thirty-fifth book in the Xanth series by Piers Anthony. Like I have said before, this series gets zanier and zanier- with plenty of humour, play on words, off-beat characters, and imaginative storylines. This book is certainly all of that and more.

But there wouldn’t be a next-to-last site until there was a first one. The others tired of singing or playing music, but Dawn insisted that Picka keep practicing regardless. She was happy to explain. I love Picka, and he loves m. .She made a three-quarter smile. It took some work in bed to convince him, and some magic, yet I finally persuaded him. But he needs to be worthy. So if he becomes the best musician in Xanth, he’ll be worthy, won’t he?. The others, seeing the way of her thinking, agreed.

This book grew on me. I wasn't impressed at first, but as the story developed, I was hooked and couldn't stop reading. For the first time in this series, I actually cared about Dawn and Eve, whom I had intensely disliked before. Their situations made them sympathetic: Eve's life in Hades is lonely and empty, while Dawn longs for the kind of relationship she thinks her sister has. Perhaps it's irony that after all of their shameless flirtations, they are now unhappy. Dawn can be a bit imperious and insists on seducing another character in spite of his protests, but also demonstrates an admirable willingness to do what is best for Xanth no matter the personal cost.

The protagonists make enemies, contend with them, flee them, and desperately try to figure out how to prevail. The use of music as both magic and weapon was a marvelous idea and made for a different kind of battle between the two sides. The final contest kept us wondering exactly how everything would turn out. Yes, there were too many puns, but there was real humor, too, such as Chameleon's being split into Wynne and Fanchon. Guess what? They don't like each other. People fall in love and in bed, or in bed and then in love, at the drop of a hat, including Dawn. There is no developing romance with her, no gradual build-up of affection, just the sudden announcement of her crush and prompt seduction of her target. Sexuality reaches a new level of explicitness as the author describes penetration and ejaculation.

In spite of how much I liked this book, I won't continue to read new Xanth novels. The author is taking the series in a direction I don't want to follow. I fell in love with Xanth in the early days of the series when the emphasis was still on magic, fun, and adventure. Sexuality was present, but muted. Now, sex and seduction dominate the books and are getting more detailed. Does this really add to the story or to the appeal of Xanth? These seductions are about women imposing their sexual will on reluctant men, manipulating them to get what they want. And these women aren't necessarily villains, but main characters! This isn't the Xanth I remember and not a Xanth I want to visit.

The author's treatment of favorite characters also turns me away from reading future books. I used to love Metria, but now I dislike her. She's married, with a partial soul, yet continues to tempt men. I let this go for several novels thinking she wasn't actually serious, but just intent on mischief. Yet, in this book, she is shamed when another character points out her misbehavior, yet later disappears with a man for "serious smooching." I don't want to read any more of this or find out that she eventually does go all the way. She's cheating on her husband, who by the way, she used to adore. Bink was one of my favorite characters, but he was cheapened in this novel when the author had him enjoy sneaking peeks at another woman behind Wynne and Fanchon's backs. First, Wynne was supposed to be the most divinely beautiful woman in Xanth. How could Bink even notice any other woman when she was around? Second, in "The Source of Magic," when he is in the Magic Dust Village surrounded by young, lovely women wanting to spend the night with him, Bink was not appreciating the feminine views or wishing he could have arrived there before he married. His thoughts were simply that he had no intention of indulging the girls. If that scene were written today, the emphasis would be on slipping decolletages, panties, feels, kisses on the mouth, Bink's weakening resistance, and a "reaction" around his midsection.

Other readers may not be bothered by these things, but I am. Sexualizing the series has not, in my opinion, made it better, but made it tawdry. Women have become manipulators and predators in a land that emphasizes breasts, panties, and seduction. Sorry, but I'm going back to the early novels where not all beautiful women were femme fatales and the author was capable of writing a decent story without sex.

As usual, this book was delightful and fun. I kept wondering how the "villain" would meet his demise or even if he should considering the beautiful music he made, so part of the time I was rooting for him. As expected, Mr. Anthony came up with the perfect solution so that he didn't have to die, could still make his music and still be punished for his prior evil ways. I never cease to be amazed at the numbers of puns that are so much fun in the Xanth books. I love Piers Anthony.

I liked where the pets were with them and helped them along the journey and helped them.

Another fabulous Piers Anthony Zanth series book! Great puns as usual and a few new and older characters. If you have never read Piers Anthony don't worry about it and read this book! It will easily introduce you to the characters and the wonderful world of Zanth. This time there is a twist to Humphrey's usual deal for information. That has never happened before. There are also a great twist of characters too! One you will never believe!! It took me totally by surprise! You will love this book!

Xanth series is always great. This time a battle for who is the best musician in Xanth. And this time one of the princesses falls head over heels in love...with, well you will see. But it is her love and determination that makes this unlikely husband candidate into Xanth's most musical hero. Can love win out, time will tell. Pssst Xanth princesses seldom play fair when it comes to the guy they choose to love.

Piers Anthony has done it again! This book is fantastic with lots of action. The characters were well thought out and loved the interaction between them and really liked the character of Picka. He was good at figuring things out but willing to listen to what the others had to say.
I have read many of the Xanth books and have never been disappointed. Not done reading this one but so far it is as enjoyable as previous installments. One of the few books I've read that can make me laugh out loud. (Caution, many of the puns are cringe-worthy).
