This is the first comprehensive book on the dynamical diffraction of x-rays since the development of synchrotron radiation

This is the first comprehensive book on the dynamical diffraction of x-rays since the development of synchrotron radiation. There is an introduction to the subject presenting early developments and the basic results, followed by a detailed development of the diffraction and propagation properties of x-rays in perfect crystals and by an extension of the theory to the case of slightly and highly deformed crystals. The last section gives three applications of the theory: x-ray optics for synchrotron radiation, locations of atoms at surfaces, and x-ray diffraction topography.

Instead, the simpler kinematic theory of X-ray diffraction sufficed for most efforts of crystallographers to determine the structure and location of atoms in almost any configuration of scientific and technological interest until the decades of the 1950's and 1960's. Although it had been around for some 30 years, in the early part of the 1950's dynamical diffraction was an esoteric field which one learned about in an advanced course in X-ray diffraction. From my point of view, it is a tour de force.

The proposed nonstandard diffraction theory is constructed directly from the Maxwell equations for the crystalline medium in the X-ray wavelength range. Analysis of Maxwell?s equations for dynamic diffraction is possible using the method of multiple scales which is modified to the vector character of the problem. In this case, the small parameter of the expansion is the Fourier component of the polarizability of the crystal.
