He is Professor of Scottish Politics at the University of Aberdeen Keating was born in north-east England of Scottish and Irish parents. He holds British, Irish and Canadian citizenships. Keating holds a BA from the University of Oxford and a PhD from Glasgow College of Technology.

Michael Keating FRSE is a political scientist specialising in nationalism, European politics, regional politics and devolution. Keating was previously Professor of Political Science at the University of Western Ontario, Canada and between 1979 and 1988 taught at the University of Strathclyde. He has been visiting professor in the United States of America, Spain, France, Australia and England.
