This is an excellent book on lofting both boats and aircraft and remains relevant today. The book hasn't been re-titled Fairing and Lofting for the 2100 Century Computer Nerd. It isn't really a criticism of a book on manual methods to say that there exist computer based methods. Much of the world still lacks cad capability, or the ability to output it meaningfully. But more to the point, there exist many methods that rely today on techniques that can only be estimated by computers

I bought this book as part of a boat design class. Everything in this book was state of the art during WWII, but can be replaced with about 2 hours of CAD instruction. Also, I've actually lofted and built quite a few boats, and the methods used here make a fairly simple and straight-forward process seem incredibly complicated. Good cure for insomnia.

This is an excellent book on lofting both boats and aircraft and remains relevant today. It isn't really a criticism of a book on manual methods to say that there exist computer based methods. The book hasn't been re-titled Fairing and Lofting for the 2100 Century Computer Nerd. Much of the world still lacks cad capability, or the ability to output it meaningfully. But more to the point, there exist many methods that rely today on techniques that can only be estimated by computers. Techniques such as Stressform, Constant Camber, tortured panels, Cylinder molding, KSS, master mold, etc... It's doubtful the originators of these methods heavily used this book, but they are from this time, and reading this book allowed me to decode those still popular methods.

So yeah, there is freeware online that may be more useful. Or you can spend tens of thousands on speciality programs. But some people still want to know the historical methods, and if you find this book too difficult to penetrate it isn't because you personally posses any of these skills, whatever software you may have loaded on your computer.

In 1989,I bought this book at the Armchair Sailor Book store in Charleston S.C. Ever since that time, I still consider this book the ABC of mould lofting. In the case of Sailing yachts, some additional examples must be sought from other sources to make this a complete book for Lofting a set of lines plans. With the advent of 3-CAD, the exercise of checking a lines plan for fairness may be practised using basic techniques as described in the book. This book goes beyond fairing Hulls and has examples to other applications such as Steel ship building and Aircraft skins.

I wonder if anybody still uses methods from the book. Maybe it was good 40 years ago but today it is outdated - both in content and style.

I wouldn't buy it again.
