John Lenk wrote this four volume series of McGraw Hill Circuits in the late 90s, and they have now become classics, some (especially volume 4) going for over $300 at various times, depending on supply fluctuations. Sheets also wrote a 7 volume series at the same time that was filled with bad circuits, mistakes and a truckload of inaccuracies and non working circuits. In contrast, Lenk's books are true gems. We've tested the majority of the circuits in all four of his volumes and there are only a few minor errors in the WHOLE series!

For reference, I'm the head of Engineering at Payroy dot com, and my job is to spot pirated circuits and get their inventors credit and proper pay. Just like older algorithms, some (ahem) "foreign" engineers comb old volumes for either forgotten or public domain circuits they can either poach or re-patent with a few minor tweaks. Each of Lenk's volumes have NEW circuits not covered in the previous editions, and cover both analog and digital.

Of course 17 years later has brought a lot of new movement in quads, parallel processing, etc. that obviously aren't covered, and Linear has come up with many new circuits in that field both in a series of new books and online. One of the best new (2012-2015) series is Platt's Encyclopedia of Components, which give sweet spots and limitations for components, not just circuits. The first volume is Encyclopedia of Electronic Components Volume 1: Resistors, Capacitors, Inductors, Switches, Encoders, Relays, Transistors and the second is Encyclopedia of Electronic Components Volume 2: Diodes, Transistors, Chips, Light, Heat, and Sound Emitters.

To help you find the Outstanding Mcgraw Hill series, I've posted this review on all four volumes. The Amazon link comes and goes and varies with keywords, so here also are the most current Amazon locations for all four:

-- McGraw-Hill Circuit Encyclopedia and Troubleshooting Guide, Volume 1
-- McGraw-Hill Circuit Encyclopedia and Troubleshooting Guide, Volume 2
-- McGraw-Hill Circuit Encyclopedia and Troubleshooting Guide, Volume 3
-- McGraw-Hill Circuit Encyclopedia and Troubleshooting Guide, Volume 4

Volume 4 is the most expensive (600+ key circuits) and Volume 3 takes a lot of wrangling with Amazon's search to access.

In addition to a wealth of circuits, this series was and is still renowned for "troubleshooting" -- which means a LOT more than that. Lenk actually ANALYZES the circuits for defects, performance limits, applications, typical problems and innovative and creative solutions! These take decades of experience to figure out. Unlike the Sheets series or even online circuits, this gives designers, engineers and hobbyists a real leg up, as the others are often just copied out of manufacturer's cut sheets, and of little value in explaining, testing, trying or learning. Even the most modern CAD software isn't loaded with these tips, which is why the McGraw series is of such lasting value, and belongs on every designers reference shelf. Old doesn't always mean useless!

Library Picks reviews books exclusively for the benefit of Amazon shoppers, always buys the books we review, and has nothing to do with Amazon, the authors or publishers. If we give our backround, it's only to show shoppers our point of view, expertise, and limits.
