Loved the class and the textbook! When I found Duchamp's The Fountain, I was quite angry that the Lois Fichner-Rathus put a urinal in the book calling it art!! Oh, I was livid, and griping to my family, until I read and understood what it was all about. I wrote a paper on Duchamp and his Fountain. What was amazing about this class was that the High in Atlanta, had an exhibit From Picasso to Warhol. I went 3 times to check out the works. there were several Duchamp which were interesting only because of the change he made in Art, and why. I never liked Picasso, but when I saw the Lady in the Mirror I fell in love! Now, Matisse's The Dance, was shocking! It was not what I thought it would be. You could see the outline of the figures he decided not to put in the painting.... I saw several Jackson Pollock, and Warhol had an entire room! So, enjoyed reading this textbook, learning and appreciating Art, and especially going to a Museum to see some of the works that were pictured in the book. There were works that were in the textbook on exhibit, but It has been years, and I don't remember exactly which they were.
The book is good but the fact that it says "WITH CD" and then underneath it says "THERE IS NO CD" is kind of annoying especially since I purchased it thinking there was a CD. I think amazon should penalize things like this as it is being advertised to buyers that there is a CD-ROM inside your package, when in reality there isn't and I feel like I was tricked into purchasing an item for something that doesn't actually come with it. Other than that issue the book is in good condition and appears to be fine. But when it comes down to it I wouldn't repurchase from the seller.
I bought this for my 100 level art class. I have to say, this is the best art textbook I've had (I've had a couple as a media major). It's concise but detailed enough to provide something beyond just basic insight. The material is broad in topic and arranged in a way that makes sense, and it draws themes over the entirety of art history together well. The book arrived in good condition as advertised.
I thought I knew everything I needed to know about art, and then I grabbed this book for a beginning art class I should have taken years ago, so far, I have learned a little about art history, the purpose of art, appreciated new styles, forms and a variety of various horizon lines in famous portraits just waiting to be discovered by the admirer, student, artist, buyer, seller! For the price I paid, 20-25$ it was a bargain as well, It has been best textbook for college I have ever purchased in years. I highly recommend this, if nothing else, for the art history for the collector, and the different styles and mediums available for the artist to increase their artistic pursuits.
The pages are falling out of my book :( there's hardly anything holding the pages in... It was used so I guess I should have expected some wear but this is really unfortunate....
Great book, well written and easy to understand. I had to have this for an Art History class I was taking and it is one of the better books I have had to read my whole time in school. Very informative, great pictures and easy to follow. I have a much better understanding and appreciation of art from using this book. The online portion with quizzes, flashcards, etc. made this a more pleasant experience. I also like the PowerPoint presentations that went along with the book.
We were able to use the order versions of this book for our class. But I kept this one, because I like new books and it had some interesting updates that the others did not have. It was well put together for the topics, and I really enjoyed having it for my class. Art Appreciation was a easy because I was able to have this book for a great reference point.
I don't even know where to begin, but this book is one of the best art books I have read. The details/info in this book greatly helped me with my online class. Very happy that I purchased it instead of renting.
