Our university has been using Literacy for the 21st Century since 2001

Our university has been using Literacy for the 21st Century since 2001. Students purchase this text during their sophomore year. Gail E. As the market leader in literacy education, Literacy for the 21st Century: A Balanced Approach, continues to evolve in providing the most contemporary and practical approaches for literacy instruction. This carefully organized and thoroughly applied text is written to ensure that readers understand the current theories behind and the critical components of instruction for teaching reading and writing as complementary in the development of literacy.

Gail Tompkins I'm a teacher, first and foremost. I began my career as a first-grade teacher in Virginia in the 1970s. The children proudly took their books home to read to their parents. I remember one first grader who cried as the first day of school was ending. My first few years of teaching left me with more questions than answers, and I wanted to become a more effective teacher so I started taking graduate courses.

Balanced in its approach, Literacy for the 21st Century models how to execute the principles and processes recognized by the field as exemplary practice. The text features authentic classroom teaching models with student artifacts, minilessons, and four core instructional approaches for developing literacy skills.

The book itself is a great resource, but I really regret buying new. The 6th edition has typos and is missing entire sections that were available in the 5th edition (of which our teacher references during class). It is not a matter of page numbers changing, but entire teaching methods in the compendium were removed (even though they are not outdated!) and a section on ESL parent connection is in the 5th ed. and not the 6th. It is a waste of money to buy this newer edition.

The book I had bought (at least from the description on Amazon. Totally misleading by the way) said good condition. This is not worth $34.99. To me USED has the understanding of possible tears, writing, maybe highlighter but not 2 USED stickers on the front. It makes it look like a cheap product and I know the publisher and author of this book did a very good job writing and printing this book. I know teachers who have been very fond of this book. At the very least, call it like it is. I would go with, "acceptable condition" rather than good.

I used this as a college textbook. It was in great condition , delivered. I just did not like how this book was organized. For me it just was not organized by topi and you would have to seach everye here to find what you needed.. There are great tips and assessments in the book. If your willing to search through for a while to find what you need, get the book.

I just purchased this book to study for my Reading Specialist Praxis. I read it cover to cover. I used this book in undergrad over 7 years ago. It is STILL the best textbook to use for literacy information.

Amazon's Kindle version does not include the online content, despite the claim that it does. There is no ACCESS CODE included. Waste of money for that. For online access with e-text copy and active links, order straight from Pearson: http://www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com/northamerica/myeducationlab/students/titles-available/title.php?isbn=9780132837798
Pearson site is less expensive, but does not offer access to the textbook without internet (i.e. it is not downloaded). If you want a downloaded version, without active links to online content, then the Kindle version is OK.

I am using this fast paced, text to teach my graduate students. I have been teaching for 39 years. I wish I could have had Thompson's guidance as a young teacher. I have found that her teaching is very close to my style. I encourage my students to purchase rather than rent the text because it is such a valuable resource. I have been using this text for two years. Those students who chose to rent it eventually purchased it because they felt it to be a wise investment. Thompson has written an easy to read, spiraling text. My students are in love with her. She gives concrete examples and list of titles saving teachers many hours of research. Thompson is up to date and right on the money with the teaching of modern literacy. She is realistic and encouraging to all teachers.
