Mark Ryan has taught at all grade levels, from elementary classes to university seminars. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in history from the University of California at Santa Cruz, a Master’s degree from the University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras, and a Doctorate in Higher and Adult Education from Arizona State University at Tempe. From 1994 through 1997 he wrote the Ask the Teacher column syndicated by Copley News Service and was regularly published in such newspapers as the Boston Herald, the Denver Rocky Mountain News, and the San Diego Union Tribune.

Regardless of being a parent, credential student, or present teacher Ask The Teacher is a good guide and outline to many of today's questions for those involved in education. Ryan provides answers and strategies to a range of questions from classroom environments, truancies, and testing.

While some suggestions and ideas may seem difficult to implement their inclusion is important because it shows where we should be and what we can do. Keep in mind some suggestions are difficult to implement based on time and economic reasons and keep an open mind while reading Ryan and you will get more out of Ask The Teacher then you plan. Overall it is a good guide for anyone looking at the teaching professor and provides parents a good question bank to ask teachers if they are concerned about their child's education.

This was one of the few text books that I actually used. I hate when professors assign you books to purchase for the class and you barely end up using them. This was a really useful and well written book. I bought it for the credential program and it sure helped a lot. It was nice to see that the content of the book was basically a compilation of answered questions from actual teachers, rather than just some random author writing a book. I plan on selling some of my text books, but this is one of the few that I plan on keeping and referring back to when I become a full time teacher!

I used this textbook for one of my courses in a multiple subject credential program. My first impression was that the format was easy to read and the writing was more engaging than many other books I'd read for my program. The book is formatted in a question-and-answer form, so it is easy to find the information you need. As I began reading, I noticed that the information is extremely applicable to the classroom. At the time I read the book, I was coaching preschool gymnastics, and much of the book's content was applicable to this type of non-classroom teaching as well. Overall a helpful, well-written, textbook that is extremely relevant to daily classroom practices.

I enjoyed this book with my class; I felt that is was authentic in its approach. I especially liked it because of its "get right to the meat of the matter" writing style. I feel that it is not only good for teachers but also parents, if they would take the time to read it for advice on raising their children. I had the fortune to have a class with Dr. Ryan as the professor at National University. He is in my opinion as he writes, authentic, at times overwhelmingly specific, full of good advice, and knowledgeable on a variety of topics.

As a graduate student and single-subject English candidate, I found the book both relevant and current with regard to its recipes for effective teaching in today's diverse classrooms!
I would give it an "A" for excellence.
Mark Ryan is not only a scholar, he is a thorough instructor at National University.
Most instructors give students the bare bones and make them research for the rest--this is great for some, but it is nice to have a barometer--Ryan leaves no stone uncovered.
This book only scratches the surface of his vast and up-to-date knowledge, but it is packaged to inform and educate even the most timid novice.
I had to rent this book for a class I took, and I enjoyed it so much I purchased it. The information it contains is very helpful and author M. Ryan does and excellent job of giving practical advice, solutions, and strategies for teachers and students alike. I have already told colleagues about this book and they too have discovered it's value. Simple read with a wealth of knowledge from a clear expert, I highly recommend!
