Deborah Nourse Lattimore (Author). Kwan Yin saves China by weaving a dragon robe for the emperor to placate the rain dragon who has been angered by the emperor's false ministers

Deborah Nourse Lattimore (Author). Kwan Yin saves China by weaving a dragon robe for the emperor to placate the rain dragon who has been angered by the emperor's false ministers. Faithful Kwan Yin not only observes their treachery, but she also steadfastly weaves the dragon robe in the face of all danger until it is finished and taken by the rain dragon who, in return, destroys the enemy. Lattimore uses traditional Chinese designs and colors in picturing an imaginative phoenix, a ferocious tiger, and a magnificent dragon.

It is a beautiful book, so many images for children to find, ask questions at it is read to them or as they read the book themselves. Met the author/illustrator. Learning about her and her work makes the book even more delightful.

...but the story's allover the place.

I appreciate that an author has a very limited word count when it comes to children's books, but this book wasted what space it had on repeated phrases.

I wouldn't recommend it. I think that if you were to read it aloud to a child, you'd spend more time explaining what was meant than actually telling a story.

This beautifully illustrated hardcover children's book is loosely based on one of the emperors of ancient China. It is not a long story, but it is replete with fantasy, dragon mythology, and the deep values of honesty, responsibility, and loyalty. As an educator (7th grade English), I found it useful for identifying and examining the use of cause and effect in literature. The Dragon's Robe is also a great springboard for discussion on the ethical standards of the four characters in the story. Also, since the protagonist/hero is Kwan Yin, a woman, it supports the concept of gender equality which I promote in my classroom. Sadly, this book is out of print. Many children will be missing out on this perfect read-aloud book.
