Baker Publishing Group. The Book of Common Prayer: And Administration of the Sacraments and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church. There is gilding around the page edges, which just adds to the attractive feel of the volume. And it's made to last - I've had my copy for perhaps a couple of years now, and it's regularly used, and yet it's showing very little sign of wear and tear.

The Book of Common Prayer is the old and well-loved prayer book of the Church of England, in use since the 16th century. It contains four loose presentation pages: one each for Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Matrimony, and one for any occasion.

Examples include "THE MINISTRATION OF BAPTISM TO SUCH AS ARE OF RIPER YEARS AND ABLE TO ANSWER FOR THEMSELVES" and "A COMMINATION OR DENOUNCING OF GOD'S ANGER AND JUDGEMENTS AGAINST SINNERS WITH CERTAIN PRAYERS TO BE USED ON THE FIRST DAY OF LENT, AND AT OTHER TIMES, AS THE ORDINARY SHALL APPOINT.

Book of Common Prayer (BCP) is the short title of a number of related prayer books used in the Anglican Communion, as well as by other Christian churches historically related to Anglicanism. The original book, published in 1549 in the reign of Edward VI, was a product of the English Reformation following the break with Rome. The work of 1549 was the first prayer book to include the complete forms of service for daily and Sunday worship in English

The Book of Common Prayer is the old and well-loved prayer book of the Church of England, in use since the 16th century. In this revised 1662 form, it has become one of the classic texts of the English language, its prayers and expressions making the English language what it is today. Cambridge's new editions of the Prayer Book have been freshly typeset for the 21st century, using a modern digital typeface to give a clear printing image and greater readability. Nevertheless the format and page layout of this book follow its predecessor (originally produced in the early 20th century) page for page. The book provides the complete 1662 services, including the traditional forms of the baptism and marriage services. The print is slightly larger than in the Standard Edition and this particular style is bound in black French Morocco leather and presented in a slipcase. It contains four loose presentation pages: one each for Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Matrimony, and one for any occasion.

A rich source of liturgy, prayers, and reflection that's proved a deep source of challenge and inspiration to Christians for some four hundred years. I dip into this on a frequent basis and find the rhythms of prayer that it helps to encourage immensely useful. This is one of the nicest editions of the BCP—worth every cent.

Love it - old, traditional and beautifully illustrates what we tradional Anglicans believe

Truly beautiful.

I wanted a nice copy of the 1662 BCP, and chose this one. I was not disappointed.

The black Morocco cover is beautiful. The Prayer Book is a nice handy size, easy to hold and use. However, don't let the size fool you. The print is large and very comfortable to my old eyes. I don't need to hold it close to see it. In fact I can lay it in my lap and read it.

The paper is thick enough to have minimal bleed through. The binding is sewn, not glued like so many books are today.

True to Cambridge quality, this is a Prayer Book that will last a lifetime with care.

I will start by simply saying that my two start rating implies nothing about the contents of this book, just the binding.

When publication of this Brown Goatskin edition first began in 2006, the quality of the binding was superb. Many images, and a fantastic review by Mark Bertrand may be found at Bible Design Blog. However, the version currently being bound and published under the same ISBN is not equal to the one reviewed there.

First off, I have an extremely hard time believing that this is actually goat skin. I own several Cambridge bibles in goat skin, and there is no comparison. In addition, the yap that can clearly be seen in Mr. Bertrand's pictures is non-existent on mine.

Secondly, the paper is not the same. The copy I received is at least 25% thicker to the eye due to the use of heavier paper.

Thirdly; while the description clearly says so, the edges are not art-gilt--that is to say, not gold over red. As a very basic rule of thumb, with an art-gilt book, the edges should look gold when the book is closed, and red when it is open. This book is only edged in gold. I don't consider this a big deal ultimately, but what you get is not what the description states.

Lastly, this book is super stiff. It will barely lay flat, and only when opened to the absolute center. It completely fails Mr. Bertrand's 'bible yoga' test.

If you are interested in obtaining the best available binding of the BCP, I would suggest Cambridge's current French Morocco Enlarged; or a vintage Cambridge calf skin binding. Either will cost you less money.
