The Rebuttal: A Biblical Response Exposing The Deceptive Logic Of Anti-Gay Theology

After publishing my first book, Love Won’t Let Me Be Silent, I had the privilege of reading Pastor Romell’s compelling articles and blogs. In fact after reading so many of his amazing works, I quoted him extensively in my new book, They Say That I Am Broken.

In The Rebuttal, Pastor Romell D. Weekly holds the pervasive, traditional arguments against homosexuality to this standard. He demonstrates through Scripture how the claims put forward by leading opponents of homosexuality have no basis in biblical reality. As over 200 anti-gay arguments are put to the test-not through sociological appeals or personal philosophy, but through chapter and verse of Scripture itself-you will be challenged to put the traditional view of homosexuality where it rightly belongs-in the past.

I recommend BOTH of Romell’s books regularly.

Because scholars have tended to use the term in different ways, biblical theology has been notoriously difficult to define. Although most speak of biblical theology as a particular method or emphasis within biblical studies, some scholars have also used the term in reference to its distinctive content.

The Christian Church has an unfortunate history of sometimes getting it wrong. From racial equality to women's rights, twisting Scripture to fit a bigotry-based agenda is, regrettably, not unheard of.

While many choose to submit to majority rule in relation to the more controversial issues of our day, we must never forget that the majority ruled in relation to the subjugation of races and of women at one time or another. We are, therefore, compelled to allow the Bible to be the standard by which we accept or reject commonly held beliefs.

In The Rebuttal, Pastor Romell D. Weekly holds the pervasive, traditional arguments against homosexuality to this standard. He demonstrates through Scripture how the claims put forward by leading opponents of homosexuality have no basis in biblical reality.

This book will be very helpful for people with an open mind looking to understand how gay Christians can really be believers, and walk in faith. The prevailing Christian paradigm that God hates the "sin" of homosexuality is very strong. The misuse, and erroneous interpretation of scripture continues to bolster the anti gay attitude. I am a straight Christian who was once firmly ensnared in the anti gay paradigm. Then I saw that the scriptures in Leviticus also said that he who marries his sister, and he who marries his wife's sister, is an abomination to God, just like the man lying with a man. When I saw this I said, " Oh Abraham, and Jacob are an abomination to God?" I now understand God was speaking of the ordinances, or rituals, of the Canaanite, and Egyptian gods. From this revelation I was freed to see what God really says on the subject. This book is a helpful place to start. I also recommend books looking at Romans as rhetoric to help you see what God is really saying through Paul in Romans 1&2. It is great to be free to love my Gay brothers and sisters!!!

I found both of his books very interesting and easy to read. He tends to be repetitive though. As interesting as I found this book, I can't say that I completely agree with his findings.

As an advocate working in the Christian church for understanding, education and dialogue between the LGBT Christian community and the church, I am often asked for recommendations of books that people can read on their own journey. I recommend BOTH of Romell's books regularly.

If you are GLB and are trying to reconcile your sexual orientation with your faith, BOTH books "Homosexianity" and "THe Rebuttal") are a must. Romell is a man who cares deeply about Scripture and was willing to obey God and His Word in the living of his own life as a gay Christian. He recounts his journey to reconciling theology well; his story will resonate with the struggle many endure to find GOD'S truth.

In trying to counter the misinterpretations of the Bible so commonly used to tell gay people they have two choices: stop being gay or be celibate, Romell takes those popular misinterpretations and dismantles them. These arguments are those used by several anti-gay theologians that are well known and well respected by the reparative therapy groups. In churches, it is these very arguments pastors and leaders will often use to keep their LGB congregants in bondage and submission. Point by point, Romell counters the dogma. "The Rebuttal" is then a HANDY tool to have.

For straight people trying to understand this chasm, using both of Romell's book will give you a clear grasp of the issue. My copies of the books are highlighted and written in and even falling apart from lots of usage.

Either book is great, but in tandem, the reader will gain great understanding of the verses IN CONTEXT and have tools to engage in respectful, intelligent conversation about same-sex attracted Christians and the Bible. "Homosexianity" recounts Romell's own journey as he researched the Scriptures. We follow his own journey of searching for the truth and the results of those studies. "The Rebuttal" then deconstructs the most popular conservative fundamentalist objections to affirming theology. He does a particular excellent job of dealing with Dr. Robert Gagnon's verbose anti-gay theology.

Just as a side note, Romell is a black man. There is little written affirming the black Christian gay community. "The Rebuttal" fills that much needed niche.

Get both books; I ensure you you will be marking them up and saying "yes, yes, yes!!" as you read Romell's words. Get the books, get free of a bondage not from God.

This is the first truly complete book I have read dealing with the issue of homosexuality, Scripture, and a Biblical response. I came at it from a deeply conservative (raised Southern Baptist) view point that has been tempered through the years by the realities of what I have seen Christ do in my own life. I was skeptical at first that Pastor Weekly could make a sound theological argument for the acceptance, indeed endorsement, of homosexuals through Christ and God's word. However, as I turned each page and cross referenced his work with my own Bible that I held in my hands, I began to realize that the Spirit was indeed working. I teared up several times throughout the study of this book. I believe that my life has been changed, much for the better by this work and labor of Christian love by Pastor Weekly.

Please open your Bible, open your heart, and receive this work as intended. May we all be better Christians for it. And may the Church finally being to practice the highest of all commands: to love thy God with all thy heart, soul, and mind. Well-done Pastor Weekly!

Pastor Romell Weekly has written a masterful rebuttal refuting the teaching of Dr. James Dobson and others who are so sure of themselves that God hates homosexuals and is waiting to push them into an everlasting lake of fire to punish them for their deviancy. I, myself, believe God loves homosexuals and finds nothing deviant or sinful in the love that they share with one another. Furthermore, I believe so-called Christians who do not follow The Law of the Messianic King Jesus exhortation to love your neighbor as yourself, are going to be the ones who will hear Jesus say, depart from me for I never knew you. David, a man after God's own heart, had an "erotic" love for Saul's on Jonathan. Our modern Bibles were translated using Classical Greek instead of Koine Greek in which it was originally written, therefore many of the translated words were guesses, therefore given wrong outcomes to the meanings of those words and giving wrong doctrinal teachings about homosexuality. The Rebuttal is the second book by Pastor Weekly. I would recommend first reading his book, Homosexianity. Pastor Weekly was married and like so many others condemned homosexuals until he found the truth that God loves the homosexual and does not damn him for loving someone of the same sex. Both are great reads.

This is the second of Pastor Weekly's books that I've bought; Homosexianity was the first.

Both books are excellent resources for persons that want to intelligently and effectively combat homophobia.
