The Spiritual Life book.

It truly is, quite simply, about the spiritual life and what that really means. One person found this helpful. Underhill quotes and refers to a number of writers like Baron von Hügel and George Herbert who are not exactly household names: don't let that scare you off. The names are not important and neither is a knowledge of their works.

SPIRITUALITY, WRITES EVELYN UNDERHILL, IS NOT to be confused with some narrow, other-worldly lifestyle, but lies at the heart of all religious expression.

Evelyn Underhill (6 December 1875 – 15 June 1941) was an English Anglo-Catholic writer and pacifist known for her numerous works on religion and spiritual practice, in particular Christian mysticism. In the English-speaking world, she was one of the most widely read writers on such matters in the first half of the 20th century.

Evelyn Underhill, an English poet and mystic, was the 20th century's most authoritative voice on mysticism. She defined clearly and succinctly the importance of mysticism as an underlying foundation of any religious or spiritual practice.

It's a classic. I've been reading and rereading it for 40 years. I've caught no typos or other things to interfere with the "reading experience" and it's free.

It was originally four talks done on radio in 1936. I've been told that it's not an easy work to read but that's not my experience. It does require concentration and, simply because of the nature of the topic, a certain amount of reflection and contemplation. It is not an entertaining read but neither is it billed as such. And, while the theology is sound, it is not a theology book nor does it presume or require a knowledge of theology. It truly is, quite simply, about the spiritual life and what that really means.

Underhill quotes and refers to a number of writers like Baron von Hügel and George Herbert who are not exactly household names: don't let that scare you off. The names are not important and neither is a knowledge of their works. The point of referring to these people is Underhill saying, "Look, I'm not the only person who has seen this or talked about it." Think of them as "verbal footnotes."

A final note for people I recovery: this is an excellent book to pick up for 11th Step work.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. While somewhat laden with parenthetical expression - perhaps attributable to higher scholarship - the book manages to be quite direct. What Underhill characterized as true spirituality is, it seems, acceptance of and gratitude for all of life: the good, the bad, the sublime, the mundane. Childlike adoration for and devotion to our Creator is paramount. To me, a comforting read but difficult undertaking which I pray I can achieve. Not doctrinal or heavily theological, I think, but informative and elucidating.

Must read for all seekers of truth, the beginner and the well advanced. For me, Evelyn Underhill was a precious discovery; an articulate, eloquent writer and a mystical scholar. Written in two parts, the book is long, and depending on where you place yourself on the ladder of mystical understanding, and available time, you may want to have this work in audiobook form from the Christian Classics Ethereal Library, which offers it for free. I feel a great sense of gratitude to have such easy access to a work of this magnitude.

It brings to me what we are living everyday and a fulfillment of how we balance thoughts, words and deeds... How to feel OK with ourselves and with others. How to feel it is normal to feel pressure and personally feel that one is following in God's way. A book to keep at hand, and connect the "why of the day". Help with the puzzle. A book to talk about, not just read.

I love everything by Evelyn Underhill. This is a little more handleable than her major piece on Mysticism.

Wonderful reading. First time to encounter Underhill's writings, and I found it easy to read and understand, yet it's not simplistic, but very thoughtful. Would definitely recommend.
