Dr. Hofmann's suitability as ambassador (given his proclaimed faith in Islam and the public dismay over a book not yet on the market) was debated in Parliament. Detractors, (without having read the book) asserted it was a disgrace to have an ambassador representing the country abroad, given his views were unconstitutional. In other words, Brother Hofmann was maligned and ridiculed both at home and internationally.

Murad Wilfried Hofmann (1931 – 13 January 2020) was a German diplomat and author. He wrote several books on Islam, including Journey to Makkah (. ISBN 15957-85-X) and Islam: The Alternative (. ISBN 15957-71-X). Many of his books and essays focused on Islam's place in the West and, after 11 September, in particular, in the United States. Dr. Hofmann, who accepted Islam in 1980, was born as a Catholic in Germany in 1931. He graduated from Union College in New York and completed his legal studies at Munich University where he received a doctorate in jurisprudence in 1957. degree from Harvard Law School.

Murad Wilfried Hofmann was the German Ambassador to Algeria and Morocco. So he thought that he had to read the Muslims’ holy book to know how they thought. In Algeria, Dr. Murad witnessed a terrible war against Muslim people. He observed that the Algerian people behaved with a degree of patience, an ability to absorb punishment and determination, but he could not explain that.

This work, firmly rooted in classical Islam, is written by a Muslim schooled in law and philosophy, with an intimate knowledge of the Arab world. That he is also a German diplomat in Morocco and a convert to Islam gives his work unique importance amongst those Europeans who seek to understand Islam on a personal level. In an attempt to build bridges, he tackles all those difficult issues which have helped to form both the old and the new images of Islam amongst Europeans. An important and provocative book, it will further our understanding of the true dimensions of a religion so near to us, yet of which we have so little genuine knowledge; a religion which shapes the lives of a billion people, including increasing numbers of Europeans. It is a book which will also further our understanding of the conflicts between our different religious cultures and perhaps, through greater awareness, find the means to resolve them.

Although I did not read this particular book, I have read Brother Hofman's Diary of a German Muslim, which he presented to me upon visiting my house in Saudi Arabia. He also kindly gave me an interview, originally published in the Saudi (English language) press. (After the dinner, we had spaghetti.)

The former German ambassador to Morocco chose early on to make his faith public knowledge. When he first converted to Islam, he published Diary of a German Muslim. When he put out this book, Islam, the Alternative, here featured in Arabic, it provoked an outcry in the German media. The attacks on Dr. Hofman were so serious that they were picked up and repeated, verbatim, by the international press.

What provoked the furor was the fact that an established German publish house was bringing out a book by a German Muslim. Vituperation and accusations plagued Dr. Hofmann and his wife for five weeks. For instance, it was claimed that every woman in the German Foreign Ministry working under Dr. Hofmann's authority was forced to wear hejab.

The Foreign Ministry requested Dr. Hofmann to submit a written report on his views, for it was becoming increasingly difficult to defend him against the onslaught without such a document. Before the storm was over, the publishing house Evgen Diederichs Yerlag asked Dr. Hofmann if he would accept what is known in writers' lingo as a "kill fee," a reduced amount of money for work done for a manuscript that is not going to be published. Rather than haggled over the issue, Dr. Hofmann suggested to his publishers that they seek the opinion of an esteemed university professor, Frau Professor Dr. Annemarie Schimmel, who was based, then, in Cologne. Widely respected in German academic circles, Dr. Schimmel was a leading authority on Islamic studies. She was also, as it happened, not Muslim.

When Dr. Schimmel received the ambassador's manuscript, she read it in one night and was so favorably inclined that she wrote a nine-page introduction to the work before returning it to the publishers.

Son of a professor of mathematics and physics, Dr. Hofmann grew up to be a young man as diversified in interests and natural curiosity as his father--a man who besides being a serious scholar also painted in watercolors and played first violin with the local symphony orchestra. Wilfreid Hofmann, later to be known as Murad Hofmann, spent around 20 years in his own early career as a ballet critic, writing for such publications as Dance News, ballet Today and Germany's Dance Archives (Tanz Archive). He divided his time between new York, London, Paris and Germany, married to an American woman by whom he had one son. Dr. Hofmann is also a certified lawyer.

It was during his period as German vice consul at the Consulate General in Algiers during the War of Independence that Dr. Hofmann had his first contact with Islam. Despite the uncertain, bloody times they lived through, Dr. Hofmann couldn't help noticing and being impressed by the patience of the Algerians. This was enough to set him reading the Holy Qur'an, which he would reread many times before deciding become a Muslim himself.

After the endorsement by Dr. Annemarie Schimmel and the exoneration ultimately given by the German Foreign Ministry and German Parliament, the publisher couldn't have been happier. "A blessing in disguise" is no mere figure of speech when it comes to the public attention that Dr. Hofmann's book received upon publication.

It was a great honor to meet Murad Hofmann.

Peace!

Murad Hoffman is a contradictory figure it seems to me. He was a senior German diplomat stationed in a Muslim country while at the same time a Muslim himself by faith. With the long history of Western manipulation and defilement of Muslim countries, I wonder how he reconciled his duties to God and Country.

Be that as it may, in ISLAM: THE ALTERNATIVE, he is simply brilliant. There are hardly any good introductions to Islam by Muslims themselves, in English that is. The latest major effort in this genre, A BRIEF ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO ISLAM, is a vivid, and tragic, reminder of how far behind Muslims are in there presentation skills. Not Murad Hoffman though.

In, Islam: the Alternative, he writes a book for the educated, intelligent, perceptive modern man. This is a book you can unabashedly give to your dentist before surgery or your professor before the finals. Its that good. Hoffman tackles a variety of pop media mis-representations and self-doubts of Muslims in this frank potrayal of Islam. And the title, Oh! the title! "Islam, the Alterantive" simply a beautiful representation. For indeed Islam is the only alternative lifestyle to what is increasingly becoming a homogenous defacto materialistic model. No other religion can stand up and offer a viable alternative, and the failure of Christianity to do so is for all to see.

STRUGGLING TO SURRENDER by Dr. Jefferey Lang is the other book that comes to mind of similar intelligent forthrightedness.

This is a very very beautiful book written by a German Muslim (an ex-ambassador and Director of NATO Information Directorate) who has a very beautifully balanced sunni/salafi (meaning Ashari) understanding. This is a must read for Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

As the name of the chapters show the book tries to cover all the "main issues" about Islam ; Islam and the West; The Complete Faith; The Islamic View of Christianity; Belief and Knowledge;Mysticism; Fatalism; Fundamentalism; Tolerance of Violence; Republic orMonarchy; Integrism: The Islamic State; Islamic Market Economy, Islam and the Environment; Art and the Prohibition of Images; Islamic Jurisprudence; Human Rights; Women in Society; The Veiled Orient,Criminal Law; "Holy War"; International Law; When Denigration becomes Tradition.

The Presentation chapter was written by Annemarie Schimmel- a lady who has always amazed me with her capability of clear and deep vision about a different civilizition in an age of information (even scholarship) chaos. Her mentioning a Turkish mother who received the news of her last and tenth child's death and was trying to calm her still crying friends tells what I mean about her ability to SEE. Mr Hofmann also has such an ability to SEE with only a different tone. And the book is full of these little enlightenments, "aha" feelings ( for me after having been reading on Islam for 18 years as well).

His ability and knowledge at approaching to tawhid/triniti issue is impressive. His gentleness and understanding to Islamic fields he does not agree (Shia and partially sufism) gives one feeling of great beauty.

He does not write with the manner of apologizing (as critics of Orientalists made some Muslim authors) but with the manner of discovering this super thing which is a bit hard to see due to its modesty.

The chapter of "When Denigration becomes Tradition" both hurts and gives great hopes to a Muslim and anyone who wants a better world. Mentioning Norman Daniel's "Islam and the West: The Making of an Image" and Ekkehart Rotter's "Abendland und Sarazenen. Das Okzidentale Araber bild und seine Entstehung im Frühmittelater" he says we know now that the Christian propaganda even at Middle Ages was very consciously designed so that people do not receive healthy knowledge on Islam. That very pious Christians (Peter the Venerable in this case) deformed translations of Quran about the very core code of Islam (There are no gods other then God (Allah) and Muhammed is his messanger) as "There is no god other then Muhammed" freezes my blood even months after reading this book. Muslims I tell this also freeze unable to understand this kind of hatred.

These are the reasons I believe it is a must for responsible people to read this book and although I have not read them yet I believe we must all read Daniel's and Rotter's books too.

Muslims also must open their hearts to gentle criticisms of this beautiful German Muslim and his suggestions on what we can do for a better world. I believe it is an Islamic virtue to accept that Islam is perfect but we individual Moslems or Moslem groups are not.
