Charles Finney understands a religious revival to be the work of man, when we renew our first love with Christ. I recommend not only reading this book, but following Finney's steps in promoting revival in your own life (pages 31-44). A religious revival is a new beginning of obedience to God. It results in the backslidden person or church returning to its first love (Jesus), and in the conversion of sinners. But watch out for his erratic theological pronouncements (the need for Christian people to be reconverted again and again, his radical emphasis on man's role in salvation, and in his denial that revival is a supernatural work of God.

Charles Grandison Finney (August 29, 1792 – August 16, 1875) was an American Presbyterian minister and leader in the Second Great Awakening in the United States. He has been called The Father of Modern Revivalism. Finney was best known as an innovative revivalist during the period 1825–1835 in upstate New York and Manhattan, an opponent of Old School Presbyterian theology, an advocate of Christian perfectionism, and a religious writer.

We've all seen fields lying fallow; nothing growing in them. But the farmer has plans for those fields. All it will take is a good plowing and some preparation to make the soil useful and ready to bear fruit. In this imagery employed by Charles Finney, the same is true for churches. They lie fallow and unproductive; yet, the Master Gardner has a plan to turn the fruitless church into a bountiful harvest. Why then doesn't He? The answer, according to Finney, is that the field must be prepared, and that responsibility falls on the church.

In "Experiencing Revival" Finney walks the reader through the process of preparing for revival. (Note that this isn't about "a" revival in the sense of a "meeting;" it is about "revival.") Of course, Finney is quick to point out that revival, the moving of the Holy Spirit throughout a whole congregation, begins with personal renewal of the individual Christians. Not surprisingly then, prayer takes center stage in Finney's writing. Fully one-third of the book is dedicated to prayer, particularly as a corporate practice of the church. From this solid foundation Finney instructs the reader on a variety of topics relating to personal renewal and reaching out into the community.

Whether you considers yourself a "layman" or a professional religious leader, this book will help kindle the fire of revival in your own life, and if shared with others, will turn the spark into a roaring fire of revival in your own church.

I read this book because I am currently working with a group of Christians who want to conduct an area wide revival a couple of hours away from where I live. What better way to gain insight into how to do a revival than someone who led perhaps one of the greatest revivals in the US? The book was a real find for me and extremely helpful. First of all, Charles Finney points out that any Christian who wants to experience revival in others, must start with himself or herself first before expecting any revival in others. If we desire to see the Holy Spirit work with us, we must clean up our own lives first before we will see any change in other people we would like to see develop a closer relationship with Jesus. This principle is true whether working with unchurched unbelievers or other truly saved Christians. This book is worthwhile for any devoted follower of Jesus Christ who would like to see a return to following sound Christian doctrine in place of "watered down" Christianity present in many so-called churches today.

I Found the information in this book very interesting and well written. It should be read by everyone calling himself a CHRISTIAN! I ask the Church People, Where are the Charles Finneys Today? God is no respecter of persons. Pray for me. Don Maggard

This is a great book. The book is compilation of Finney’s reasoning, methodology, partially application of church and personal revival.
Every aspect of revival is explored including how:
* A revival is started
* How to implement a great revival after one is started
* How not to have a poor revival
* What should be done after a revival has run it’s course
If your looking for a strong work on what a church revival is I strongly recommend this. I personally am a fundamentalist and found this book to be very useful and truthful.
