This volume is fairly comprehensive in it's dealing with most preachers, although it misses a few of the major personalities, notibly having not materials on Billy Graham except as passing references in parts about other preachers of his era. Larsen's work is one of the few out there at present dealing with the history of preachers in anything close to a comprehensive manner. I had this book assigned for a History of Preaching and Preachers course at seminary, with the professor being quite candid that the book wasn't perfect, but was in print and serviceable.

On the plus side, Larsen covers a dizzying array of preachers from multiple traditions in this 2-volume work. I certainly empathize with attempting such a massive labor. For those who have perhaps heard a name from Christian history, but have little other reference, this set will be helpful in determining a general background for each of these individuals. I also appreciated that Larsen in general did not hold back from a "warts and all" presentation of each individual--which should make pastors and seminary students alike feel better about their own idiosyncrasies.

On the negative side, Larsen seems to pick some rather minor characters from various traditions, while leaving out others entirely (the Particular and Regular Baptists suffer especially from massive snubs). Further, I caught several editing errors on birthplaces and the like, which serve as a general annoyance. However, the most negative feature of the book is Larsen's strange classification of many of the preachers herein. Apparently, any Calvinist who was not a Hyper-Calvinist was a "moderate" or "sympathetic" Calvinist, often suggesting a deviation from traditional Reformed thought which few of those he identifies under these descriptors would claim. He is also far more sympathetic to Charles Finney, Aimee Semple McPherson, and other false teachers than they deserve, while at the same time needlessly needling "neo-Puritans" for their embrace of that particular tradition. I would submit to Dr. Larsen, in objecting to the treatment of the former, that one may be grateful of the various streams of Christianity through the years without making those responsible for some of its most heinous errors and dire practices into objects of admiration.

There are also several points where he is factually dead wrong--he paints J.C. Ryle as an Amyraldian when Ryle held to Limited Atonement (see his Ryle, "Election", for more), as one particularly painful example (though, to be fair, this is a fairly common, erroneous assertion by those less familiar with Ryle's larger body of work).

Ultimately, this 2-book series is precisely what was promised--serviceable, nothing more. I think the further you go in this set, the less reliable it is--rightly or no, it seems as if the editor dozed off somewhere in the 400s. I wish it were better-edited, more reliable, and could be read with less suspicion of bias. Still, until E.C. Dargan is updated a bit and back in print, you work with what you have.

Larsen's writing style is very poor and his attempts at alliteration are annoying. While this book does contain some helpful information about many preachers, it is lacking many important details and it includes several extraneous and irrelevant facts. I would not recommend this book.

Very complete and concise information in this book. Larsen share a lot of lost and forgotten history of the church in this book! Excellent!
