Early on the morning of May 19, 1948, the long siege of Jerusalem's Old City is lifted as patriot soldiers break through the Zion Gate. But the celebration is short-lived-a long battle ensues. Moshe Sachar, a professor and strategist for the Haganah group, must keep the movement's momentum alive in the face of a dissenting mayor and a disguised SS assassin who has infiltrated the group. Meanwhile, Rachel, his pregnant wife, tends to the growing numbers of wounded at the hospital. Bodie and Brock Thoene bring to life the stories of a striking cast of characters in an epic story of heroism, tragedy, romance, and faith set against a momentous turning point in the history of the world's most sacred city.

I was excited to begin this series because the Zion Chronicles is by far my favorite book series and so when I found that this series was available I thought it would follow in the trend of the previous series. But here are my problems a lot of the characters are really annoying. Ellie doesn't seem to have much of a part in this story at all and I love her. Daniel Caan and the rest could stand to be a little kinder to Alfie and stop calling him a dummkopf. And while I feel for Daniel Caan he makes it very difficult too feel to bad for him. Lori and Jacob Kalner need to grow up! Their adolescent behavior in the Zion Covenant books was annoying then and its still annoying now even more so because their no longer adolescents. Daoud is a very interesting character and I must admit I am curios to see if they develop him further. And the one character that still kept me going was Rachel despite all that she has been through she is full of love for all people. Finally the reason that these books were doomed not to be as good as their precursors is because each book takes place in a period of only a few days and while I see why they do it that way it is an insufficient framework for a fully developed plot. I feel that these story lines have digressed into a soap opera like dynamic and we are trapped in an endless spiral were we jump from story to story without ever getting a real conclusion. Lastly I don't really feel comfortable with the way they seem to mix Judaism with Christianity. I am all for Jews and Christians working together and being friends I do believe that that is Gods plan however the Thoenes seem to try to combine the two religions a bit too much and in the end of the day even if Jews and Christians share some common beliefs and ideas they do practice two separate religions so the Thoenes should either stick to one or the other and not try to combine the two. Lastly despite all of my qualms I am still giving the book three stars because of how much I love the Thoenes this book is not without merit I merely aim to caution anyone who picks this series up don't expect any closure of your favorite story lines its an endless spiral.

I trust the historical accuracy of the fiction work because of the credentials of the authors. Will be reading supplemental history book, 1948, on the creation of the State of Israel.

Good story that helps make the human drama of the events of May 1948 come alive, as Israel struggled to survive, when all nations around her strove to destroy her before she could establish herself as a nation. Part of the tragedy was the way that the Arab leadership pursued their aims to the detriment of the welfare of their own people.
Wel
