The traditional family, we are often told, is in crisis. The Catholic Church, however, still sees the family as the building block of the Church; a mini-Church, so to speak. Divorce, remarriage, single parenthood, work and financial pressures, increased social mobility: all these factors have altered the shape of family life today.

Two missing elements in Christian families today are parents catechizing their children and the absence of family worship as a normal part of the daily routine. Puritan George Hamond shows the biblical pattern for family worship with examples from the Old Testament--Abraham, Job, and Joshua--and then that of Christ and Cornelius from the New Testament. This is an important book for those who want to establish the centrality of worship in their homes.

Puritan leader George Hamond has laid out a systematic defense for his belief in the necessity of family worship. Citing examples from both Testaments, Hamond looks into Abraham, Job, Joshua, Jesus, Cornelius, and some home churches from the Pauline epistles.

A word of caution to the reader. This book was written in the 1600's, and the language certainly reflects the time period. If you struggle to understand Shakespeare or the KJV, you will probably struggle with this work as well. Consider this two-sentence excerpt from his chapter on Cornelius:

"This is so plain and pregnant a proof that Cornelius maintained family worship that I cannot conceive what paraphrase can be made use of to illustrate it but the multiplying of words will rather darken it. Let such as require and call for an express place of Scripture make the experiment how the words mentioned are to be understood, if family worship is excluded (p.77)."
