Brian spent a lifetime seeking his father's approval. His father wanted him to be the best and the brightest, and Brian tried - desperately! When his father lay dying, Brian rushed to his bedside to plead one last time, "Please say you love me, please!" We all have a powerful need to know that someone in this world loves us and accepts us unconditionally. We especially crave our parents' blessing, and without it, we may become angry and driven, or detached and empty. We may also feel this hurtful lack between brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, or even within our religious congregation. Now family counselors Gary Smalley and John Trent, Ph.D., show us how we can transform our lives - even when it is no longer possible to receive our parents' blessing. They reveal the five key elements of the blessing, describe the most common home situations where a blessing has been denied (one of them may be ours), and offer practical, effective methods to heal broken hearts and families. Most important, they explain how we can be a blessing, and pass on that life-changing gift to our love ones.

I came from an alcoholic home. I felt ignored growing up. I felt "apart from", invisible, unvalued. I did not know how to parent when I was raising my own kids, but I thought I KNEW. I was a member of a legalist church, very attached to being right, the only ones in the pocket of the divine. We didn't believe in divorce....until the late '80's when that doctrine changed. I divorced after 16 years of living like a house slave. My kids still hold the divorce against me. In 1989 I was finishing my BA, living in low income housing--$33 per month, working, undiagnosed with ADHD and bipolarity 2. (Just so you know my current physician is bipolar 2 and has a very successful family medical clinic.) Also, you can say whatever you want about the difficulty of single parenting within or without a marriage. It's so common now it hardly means anything. But, lets leave it with--it was a good day if there was no bill in the mail box. I did not have The Blessing and I could not pass it along. I still suffer today.

What are the ancient historical origins of emotional health using The Blessing, imbuing love to shape the destiny of a child? To focus direction of the scattered? To identify and guide life pursuits strengths? To comfort and heal? Specifically how does The Blessing affect relationships with a child, a spouse, a friend a relative? Really, ladies and gents, what is more important than relationship? Really? How is The Blessing given, how is it withheld and how can we begin to greet the "C" word with an open mind, change? There are examples of me in this book and principles in Biblical characters.

Many people may not want to read some book that might mention The Deity. Put that aside just this once. This book isn't saccharine, squishy, or pushy. It's the lost practice of being a force for goodness in the world. It opens the heart.

Okay. This is the second best book I have ever read. My favorite book was written by a whole bunch of guys 2 to 3 thousand years ago. This book definitely will help you understand the struggles of life. It helped me learn to forgive and seek forgiveness. It has helped me to love others, everyone, even those that I don't particularly like, or don't like me. I have purchased approximately 10 copies, and continue to buy this book. I continue to find people that need to read it. Read it, write a note in it, sign it, and pass it to the next person, and ask them to do the same. thanX, Dion B. Muncrief

The Blessing
I am writing this review for Thomas Nelson publishers - they sent me a copy of The Blessing, by John Trent, Ph.D. and Gary Smalley.
This book was written, originally, in 1986 and has been revised and updated a few times. They just released it again and they've done an amazing job of updating it for the age of the internet.
The message of the book is the same - basically an instructional guide on how to bless the people you love. The book outlines the five ways to give a blessing:
Appropriate meaningful touch
Spoken words
Attaching high value
Picturing a Special future
Genuine Commitment
The updated version also features a website where people can go to share with others about the concepts, read about ways to bless their children and learn more. The authors have also partnered with Focus on the Family to initiate a challenge to individuals and churches to change the lives of one million children using The Blessing as a guide.
Five stars for this one.

Family blessings are a thing of the past. Blessings were passed from generation to generation and described in scripture.

This insightful book, offers solid Christian reasons for placing a blessing on each of our children. and they, we are given the tools to make sure our blessing is well developed, and lovingly received.

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to truly bless their child.

Eye-opening. Down to earth. Easy to understand. I don't always care for the writers' voice, and occasionally there is redundancy in the content, but otherwise a great book and a must-read for anyone who wants to better relationships in his or her life.

Several years ago I bought the book, The Gift of the Blessing, by Gary Smally and John Trent. For me that was one of the most inspiering books I have red. It tought me about myself and my background that made me see things and understand things that made positive changes possible. It also made me understand more about the people around me, including my parents and siblings.
It also enabled me to find a new way to give things of value to other people, in their time of need. I must honestly say that The Blessing is a good book, one that is enabling and gives new value to dealing with other people, both in my family, my neighborhood and other settings, like my Church and workplace.
Because I liked the book so much, I let a friend borrow it. He lent it to another friend, and now I don't know where it is or who has it. So when I saw that a new edition was out The Blessing, I just knew this is a book I want and need.
It you know you lack the blessing, reading the book may provide you with something that will lead you on a path for healing. I have found that the truth that the highly credible authors tell, is applicable in life.
Get the book, get inspired and be a greater blessing!
This is a wonderful book for parents and grandparents who want to make sure their children and grands have the necessary affirmations from their families to be well adjusted adults.
This book helped me as an adult to recover from missing the Blessing as a child. It helped me resolve many issues that I had.
We have a Blessing Class at church and are learning how to bless our families, friends, and church family. You will be truly blessed if you read and apply it.
