Letter of Paul to the Galatians, глава 1 Galatians, гл 1. But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord's brother. Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not. Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia; And was unknown by face unto the churches of Judaea which were in Christ: But they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed.

Galatians (Anchor Bible). I've long wanted to get my hands on a copy of J Louis Martyn's ABC on Galatians. 0385513771 (ISBN13: 9780385513777). So when I our congregation embarked on a period reflecting on the Spirit's fruit in Gal, I seized the opportunity. But reading it, I'm underwhelmed.

The Epistle to the Galatians, often shortened to Galatians, is the ninth book of the New Testament. It is a letter from Paul the Apostle to a number of Early Christian communities in Galatia.

But it rarely felt long, as Martyn's exegesis was fascinating even though it was not always convincing.

Louis Martyn, Galatians. New York and London: Doubleday, 1997. In recent years, with a few exceptions, the quality and length have substantially improved, with such exegetical standards as Fitzmyer on Luke and Romans, Furnish on 2 Corinthians and R. Brown on the Epistles of John.

As its predecessors in the Anchor Bible series have done Galatians successfully makes available all the significant historical and linguistic knowledge which bears on the interpretation of this important New Testament book. A personal letter written by Paul in the mid-first century to friends in the churches emerging in the region of Galatia, where it was circulated, Galatians is down to earth and pragmatic. This biblical book requires the modern reader to take a seat in one of the Galatian congregations, to listen to Paul's letter with Galatian ears, and discern the contours of Paul's theology. That is exactly what Dr. Martyn makes possible in his marvelous commentary, with its careful translation and creative interpretation of Galatians. Though relatively brief, Paul's letter is filled with complex theological and historical issues that demand a thorough treatment. Readers will not be disappointed in Dr. Martyn's sensitive handling of difficult passages, and all will be delighted to have a fresh translation that makes sense to our modern ears. All in all, this volume will stand out as a shining example of top notch scholarship written for the general reader.

Excellent commentary. Douglas Campbell has said in his book that it is the best commentary ever written. Everything written by Martyn is worth reading. This is probably is finest work. His insights are highly illuminating on all the texts. Campbell's newest book takes issue with Martyn on some of the dating in Galatians, but after reading both books I think Martyn still holds the field. The translation of Galatians alone is worth the price of the book. This is a book I will go back again and again. I just wish Martyn had written a commentary on Romans for the Anchor Series. I would have enjoyed reading his translation of Romans.

I was recommended by a friend to have a look at the newest credible addition to theology. It is called Apocalyptic theology and basically presents the case for the Spirit of God's invasion of the earth on a regular basis. It is really exciting and so well presented in this work, focusing on the book of Galatians. Martyn has done a great job, although this is not a book for those new to all things theological. I benefitted in so many ways by reading and studying this work - it contributes far more than just an understanding of its focus. There are gems on every page.

Excellent commentary. Even when I disagree with Martyn, he is always lively, challenging and engaging. His historical reconstruction surrounding the situation of the letter are especially intriguing.

If you're new to the "apocalyptic" reading of Paul, I'd suggest reading one of Martyn's shorter articles on the topic before reading this commentary.

One of the standard academic commentaries on Galatians. Anyone doing serious work on Galatians needs this commentary.

I ordered this along with many other references when preparing to teach a class on Galatians. The others were helpful and some were impressive but without doubt, this was by far the most objective, scholarly, and best researched volume of the ones I purchased. It is truly comprehensive in its coverage of Galatians as well as all related themes (contextual, societal, theological, politico/historical, philological). Every conceivable issue connected with the Galatian epistle and the theology of the Apostle Paul must have been addressed in this volume. Be advised that if one is looking for devotional reading or "spiritualization" of the text, this is not the volume for them. For those wanting an academic volume it is money well spent. I wonder if all Anchor Bible commentaries are this meticulously written?

I love this commentary on Galations. One of the best out there.

Just starting to use this volume in a 6 month study. It is an excellent resource full of great resources to utilize in understanding the intent of the author of Galatians and the historial, cultural background.
The commentary on Galatians is one of the most complete, thorough writings I have read. The commentary covers every possible detail, even the most remote possibilities of interpretation, yet it is sound exegetically. There is some redundancy throughout making it a longer read than is necessary to convey the same thoroughness.
