In Honest to Jesus, Funk describes these scholars' professional methodologies and personal goals, and summarizes their surprising findings. His prose is clear, his passion is bracing, and his conclusions are challenging. Funk's Jesus, in the end, emerges as a revolutionary figure for a new age, without being the least bit New Age-y. He has been a distinguished leader in biblical scholorship for more than thirty years. A Guggenheim Fellow and Fulbright Senior Scholar, he is the author of a dozen books, including Honest to Jesus and The Five Gospels. From Publishers Weekly.

In Honest to Jesus, Funk describes these scholars' profe Funk declares "the New Testament is a highly uneven and biased record of various early attempts to invent Christianity. Honest to Jesus is far and away the best book about the goals and work of the contemporary Historical Jesus movement. The logical steps taken to uncover the Real Jesus of the first millennium was an eye opener. It was like peeling away all the layers of "churchiness" and human interpretation over the decades to try to find what is the core of the person called Jesus of Nazareth. Even if you don't agree with their conclusions, I had a hard time disputing their methods.

In Honest to Jesus, Robert Funk, one of the preeminent biblical scholars of our time, embarks on a radical . In twenty-one theses, Funk articulates a revolutionary new vision of Jesus and Christianity for the next millennium.

In Honest to Jesus, Robert Funk, one of the preeminent biblical scholars of our time, embarks on a radical investigation into the transformation of Jesus the social rebel and iconoclast into Jesus the religious icon.

Honest to Jesus is far and away the best book about the goals and work of the contemporary Historical Jesus movement. This bold investigation takes the reader through the ancient gospels and history to find Jesus the subversive, the social critic, the dissident, the sage.

The book has its good points. 6) It is honest to life in recognizing the bankruptcy of much contemporary Biblical scholarship. 1) It is as clear an elucidation of Robert Funk's personal history (in capsule form) and convictions as one could wish. Given Funk's importance in the ongoing work of the Jesus Seminar, a single autobiographical volume detailing his views is likely to be valuable both now and in the futureconsider, . the light shed on the tumultuous nist years by Harry Emerson Fosdick's The Living of These Days. 2) It is well written. These are just some of the legitimate points Funk makes.

Robert W. Funk (July 18, 1926 – September 3, 2005) was an American biblical scholar, founder of the Jesus Seminar and the nonprofit Westar Institute in Santa Rosa, California. His approach to hermeneutics was historical-critical, with a strongly skeptical view of orthodox Christian belief, particularly concerning the historical Jesus.

Funk is a scholarly curmudgeon poised to incite a contemporary reformation: the cultural transformation of Jesus the icon into Jesus the iconoclast.

Robert Funk, eminent biblical scholar and founder of the Jesus Seminar, documents his brilliant and provocative search for the original voice and vision of Jesus. This bold investigation takes the reader through the ancient gospels and history to find Jesus the subversive, the social critic, the dissident, the sage. Funk envisions and proposes a revitalized Christianity--shaped by history, not orthodoxy, and based on the unparalleled power of the authentic teachings of Jesus.

An important and thought provoking book for those who are interested in examining Progressive
Christianity. Not everyone's cup of tea, of course. Personally, I would recommend this since I
found it very thought provoking.

Don't read this book unless you have an open mind about the historical Jesus because the author will give you a view of Jesus that is candid and at times heretical. But if you go to this book with an open mind I think you'll come away wondering, "What did Jesus really mean and what did Jesus really mean for me?"

Very good and rational review of the historical-critical Jesus of Galilee..

Honest To Jesus is all that the reviewers describe. It is a comprehensive look at contemporary scholarship, techniques and thinking about Jesus, the person. Although it can be heavy-going at times because of all the information included, it is worth persisting because the rewards are considerable. If Funk's anger is clear at times, so is his sensse of humor and proportion which he applies to himself as well as others. For a look at the pre-Easter, historical, and always challenging man known as Jesus I strongly recommend this book

This book started me along a fascinating journey trying to ascertain the actual events occurring in Jesus' time, what he actually said, what he might have said and what has been re-interpreted by others down through history.

Honest to Jesus is the most important book I've ever read. The greatest risk to stability in the world is fundamentalism. Christian fundamentalism is no less dangerous than Islamic fundamentalism. This is a hard book to read because it forces the reader to recognize the difference between belief and knowledge. Yet its message is invigorating because the message of the historical Jesus is so much more liberating and empowering than the fear based myth making offered by the personality cult that Christianity has become.
As Christmas 2002 approaches I see a reminder of the benign fantisy of Santa Claus, I can't help by compare Santa to the Jesus of Christianity. In Honest to Jesus, Robert Funk details the more powerful message of the Jesus of history. Life is not about heavan or hell, it is about the here and now. "Punishment is proximity without relationship. Reward is association with intamicy."
This book is a must read.
