The book doesn't really succeed at either, though the story of Joseph Warren's sadistic rise and fall as the "Great One" of a Southern cult is somewhat morbidly fascinating when read as a story that "could happen anywhere.

This book is a well written account of the double life many lead who are members of Satanic Cults. Nearly all of these cults are associated with specific religions, masonic groups or other secret societies in their upper levels of membership. Anyone who's written reviews stating that this is made-up fiction hasn't researched this topic in depth. This is real and it is occurring in America and other nations in the world.

I fell asleep reading this book. I felt like I was reading a book from the 1800s, so lame. The first 100 pages Judith Spencer rambled on and on about how joe warren took over the high priest position from his father. By page 112 I threw the book away and didnt think twice about it. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!.

This book was recommended to me as a Legal Assistant who is helping defend a Psychiatrist who is now being sued for "false implantation of memories". There were many allegations of sexual abuse and satanic rituals involved, along with Dissociative Identity Disorder. Unfortunately, I have discovered a whole new world of information regarding DID, recovery of repressed memories and satanic ritual abuse. I am an admitted skeptic and in awe of the gigantic cover-up that must be in existance to keep these practices such a secret. Makes JFK and the grassy knoll look like a kindergarten game. As a registered nurse, I do not doubt multiple personality disorders as a means to cope with events that are to painful to live with, however, as for the rest of the book, I have great difficulty believing. I know that people can do some horrible things, and continue to look "normal" to others-Ted Bundy for example; but if the majority of the town was involved in the cult, why keep it a secret? David Koresh and Jim Jones were at least out in the open. Do some reasearch of your own. Even the Church of Satan admits that they don't want anyone around under the age of 16. It doesn't make sense. A web search of satanic cults is extremely enlightening. Before you accept this book as gospel; keep an open mind and explore the horrible atrocities that have been forced on families ripped apart by the "recovered memories" of satanic ritual abuse.

Although it's quite an old book it is still very relevant today since the issue of ritual abuse has never gone away, since the abusers have never stopped.

This book follows the life of a single self-styled high priest as he perpetrates horrific crimes on young children. Totally credible with provable facts included and information drawn from multiple victims of the same person.

What I found frightening about the book is it's objective approach to the life of this person - and - the early recognition in the book that good and evil exists to some degree in all of us. No longer can be pretend that some people are 'evil' and thus separate from the rest of humanity - instead society needs to see that 'evil' sometimes sits at the dinner table. Evil hides, and is not obvious - and recognising this is key to preventing further ritual abuse by taking existing disclosures of abuse seriously and reporting them to authorities.

As the author states, satanism was transplanted into the New World from Europe, around the 1800's. Also, it is important to note that modern Satanism, such as that practiced by the church of Satan, is quite watered down. When it came to the America's, it wasn't, and some of these cells thrived independently of one another, and still do. Yes, it is unusual, but not unheard of. Most people, when confronted with that type of evil (such as in the book), steer clear of it. However, it does still continue on from generation to generation.
The New Age Movement, far more enticing and "compassionate" takes up the slack by gradually introducing people to unChristian practices, in a far less offensive way. This is the more long-term tactic of Satan: teaching you what is bad is in reality, good. There are many levels to even this, but it is the true movement of the Anti-Christ. Afterall, most people with common-sense would run from the kind of people written about in this book. So, it has to be introduced in a newer, more "one-world" friendly manner. It has to appeal to people who ordinarily wouldn't embrace it.
So, while I will admit that when compared to the larger society in North America, the events described in this book do happen, albeit rarely. However, the true enemies of God are far more appealing to modern-sensibilites, and they appear to be based on tenets that ordinarily well-rounded and compassionate people would think are good. That is how modern Christian Churches are infilrated with these ideas, over a longer period of time.
So, I just wanted to put this book in the proper perspective. Outright Santanism is practiced, and some cells from old Europe do still exist in America today, although covertly. But, don't forget that Satan's true agenda will unfold through the "compassion" of the New Age Movement. We should truly fear things that are hard to tell if they are right or wrong, and see true Satanism as an anomaly...a rareity to be guarded against, yet put into perspective.
Yes, I am a born-again Christian.
