John Symon Asher Bruce (14 May 1943 – 25 October 2014) was a Scottish musician, singer and songwriter known primarily for his contributions to the British supergroup Cream, which also included the guitarist-singer Eric Clapton and the drummer Ginger Baker. In March 2011 Rolling Stone readers selected him as the eighth greatest bass guitarist of all time.

Jack Bruce is an interesting man - complex, flawed, passionate and all too human - and a really top-notch musician of course. I waited almost 40 years for a biography on Jack Bruce. I am sorry to say this falls short. In addition to it being poorly written, it leaves out very important periods in his remarkable musical carrer.

A biography of Bruce, entitled "Jack - The Biography of Jack Bruce" was written by Steven Myatt and published in 2005.

Jack Bruce was born in May 1943 in Bishopbriggs, Lanarkshire, Scotland, to musical parents who moved around a lot, resulting in the young Bruce attending 14 different schools, ending up at Bellahouston Academy. Bruce took up jazz bass in his teens, and won a scholarship studying cello and composition at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, while playing in a dance band to support himself. The Academy disapproved of its students playing jazz, however. A biography of Bruce, entitled "Jack - The Biography of Jack Bruce" was written by Steven Myatt and published in 2005.

Despite what this guy wrote in the last Amazon review of 'Jack', it's a detailed and ultimately quite enjoyable account
of a good part of Jack Bruce's career, and his life. Does it touch on everything? Of course not. It would take a few volumes to do that. But what it DOES cover is done very well. Where else have you seen all JB's basses and amplifiers (both electric and acoustic) given such attention and described as they are here? If you're looking for a Cream book, look elsewhere......but if you would like something about the man, and heart and soul of that band (sorry Eric) 'Jack' will do nicely. I would suggest
it be a book you own.

Jack Bruce fans have been waiting literally decades for a well written, detailed biography of the multitalented Mr Bruce, and, with the publication of "Jack", by Steven Myatt...we are still waiting. Were all the editors on strike in the UK when this was written? The typos, the mistakes as to grammar and usage, even as to the titles of Jack's songs ( "Deserted Cities of the Heart" is twice called "Deserted Cities of the Night"), suggest that this was hurried into print to coincide with the Cream 2005 reunion tour. Most of the book covers the period birth through the break-up of Cream; Myatt covers the last 30 years in 50 pages, a major shortcoming. Still, there is a lot of information here, one only wishes it had been more effectively presented. A big gap is how Jack and Ginger reconciled in the late 1980s suficiently for Ginger to record with him on "A Question of Time". We never hear about Jack's parents' deaths or how they affected him, nor do we know why Jack's brother, Charlie, didnt speak to Jack for 20 years, although we are told that they remained estranged until 2003. Myatt's excuses in the Introduction, to the effect of "this is the best I could do", are weak.
